The Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a species of hawk moth with a long proboscis, and is capable of hovering in place, making an audible humming noise. These two features make it look remarkably like a hummingbird when it feeds on flowers. It flies during the day, especially in bright sunshine, but also at dusk (Herrera, 1992), dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for even diurnal hawkmoths (Pittaway, 1993). Its visual abilities have been much studied, and it has been shown to have a relatively good ability to learn colours (Kelber, 1996).

Hi Mircea,
this is a wonderful capture you have presented us today, with very good detail, colour and focus.I have uploaded a similar type of moth as well. The detail in the eye is very striking and my capture is not so nearly as detailed, well done and thanks for showing this beauty. Bob

Nice work, Mirceax. I admire the patience of all you insect photographers. I don't know how you do it! The simplicity of the background and the sharpness and detail of the subjects are wonderful. I do better with mountains that give me time to think!

Hola Mircea,
una sensacional macro,
detalles y preciosa captura...
buen trabajo amigo.

Bonjour,
What really nice results on this hummer moth, the lighting illuminates the subject with super results and the natural colors are are very rich all this plus a super nice DOF. Well done Mircea. :)

Salutare,
Foarte faina poza.
Numai bine,
Iulian

Amazing! I love the crisp sharpness of the image. I cant keep my eyes away from the moths eye. It is too perfect. Wonderful photograph and great patience on your behalf. Congrats on such a wonderful picture.

Hi Mircea,
Outstanding capture!
It's very good this picture, you frozen so good the flight of this moth, with a very appropriate high shutter speed.
I like so much the high quality of the shoot, the excellent composition made and the fill flash used, that gives you a very good and homogenous light.
A remarkable image!
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,
JM

Hello Mircea,
Perfect capture of this wonderful very fast moth.
Composition, sharpness, ighting and DOF are all superb and due to that the details, colors, movement in the wings and very pleasing soft background are wonderful.

Harry

Salut Mircea,

Frumoasa captura, imi place foarte mult, mai ales ca acesti fluturi colibri sunt printre favoritii mei. Compozitia e perfecta, bravo.
Numai bine, Cezar T.

Mircea, Such a lovely picture. This insect amazes me. The way it hovers around steadily on the flowers while it sips nectar is amazing. I have attempted to take pictures of this mobile insect with very limited success. Your picture of this difficult to photograph Hawk Moth is excellent.

Hi Mercia,

Absolutely stunning. You have amazingly well to capture this creature in flight, and in such detail. A really effective shot and great to look at. Perfect.
