Feeding and mating
|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|During a trip in Cernei Mountains I found a Carabus cancellatus biting a snail and cutting off a piece of it. Then he goes away with the prey in his jaws. I followed him and after a few meters he met another Carabus cancellatus. He put down his prey and started touching each other with the antennas. After a few minutes the second c.c. started to feed from the piece of snail while the first c.c. climb up on hers back and start mating with her. In the neighborhood, at about one meter away, it was an ant-hill and a few ants discover quickly the piece of snail and start to bite it.|
I saw this behavior of c.c. many times in the last 3 years, and next time I’ll make a film with the whole scene.
