The Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)is a passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae. As its closest living relatives are the Evening Grosbeak (C. vespertinus) from North America and the Hooded Grosbeak (C. abeillei) from Central America especially Mexico, the Hawfinch is sometimes also known as European Grosbeak.[citation needed]

This bird breeds across Europe and temperate Asia. It is mainly resident in Europe, but many Asian birds migrate further south in the winter. It is a rare vagrant to the western islands of Alaska.

Deciduous or mixed woodland with large trees, especially Hornbeam, is favoured for breeding, including parkland. It builds its nest in a bush or tree, laying 2-7 eggs. The food is mainly seeds and fruit kernels, especially those of cherries, which it cracks with its powerful bill.

This large finch species does not form large flocks outside the breeding season, and is usually seen as a pair or small group.

The 16.5-18 cm long Hawfinch is a bulky bull-headed bird, which appears very short-tailed in flight. Its head is orange-brown with a black eyestripe and bib, and a massive bill, which is black in summer but paler in winter. The upper parts are dark brown and the underparts orange.

The white wing bars and tail tip are striking in flight. The sexes are similar. The call is a hard chick. The song of this unobtrusive bird is quiet and mumbled.

Hi Mircea,
Splendid capture of this Hawfinch.
A beautiful warm light that enhances all the brown hues of his plumage.
Great timing to caught it while feeding, and the three little fruits works great as a colour accent.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Mircea,
Beautiful capture, for instance in terms of colours and precise moment. Lovely blurred background, also very colourful.
Excellent warm white balance throughout the shot.

Hello Mircea
Excellent capture of the Hawfinch ..the eye contact you have created is amazingly neat, the bird is hihlighted by the warm lighting and the perch and its open beak with food makes the scene quite dynamic. The colours of th berried and the leaves quite compliment the colours of the bird itself. The almost lical-pink beak of the bird looks so lovely with the slight gloss created by the light.
Very well done.
TFS & Cheers

mersi de dedicatie Mircea. imi place mai mult acesta decat cel care mi l-ai aratat in discutia noastra privata. modul cum isi tine ciocul si bobitele rosii dau un farmec aparte imaginii.
as fi vrut sa fiu si eu acolo sa vad si fotografiez toate pasarile de care mi-ai povestit. poate facem o locatie "Cluj-Napoca botanical garden" ca si eu am vreo 4-5 poze in galerie facute acolo.
am vazut si eu pt prima data specia asta intr-un parc saptamana trecuta in parcul Botanic din Timisoara. ca si al tau avea urme de seminte in jurul ciocului :)

Buna Mircea,

Ai surprins aceasata pasare intr-o postura foarte buna. Limina a fost foarte buna iar tu ai utilizat-o corect. Culorile penajului sunt foarte bine redate iar compozitia imaginii este inspirata.

TFS si toate cele bune,
Cristian
