Macroglossum stellatarum

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a species of hawk moth with a long proboscis, and regularly hovers, making an audible humming noise. These two features make it look remarkably like a hummingbird when it feeds on flowers, a result of convergent evolution. It flies during the day, especially in bright sunshine, but also at dusk , dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for even diurnal hawkmoths. Its visual abilities have been much studied, and it has been shown to have a relatively good ability to learn colours.

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth is distributed throughout the northern Old World from Portugal to Japan, but is resident only in warmer climates (Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, North Africa, and points east). It is strongly migratory and can be found virtually anywhere in the hemisphere in the summer. However it rarely survives the winter in northern latitudes (e.g. north of the Alps in Europe, north of the Caucasus in Russia, etc.).

Moths in the Hemaris genus of the family Sphingidae are known as "hummingbird moths" in the US, and "bee moths" in Europe, which sometimes causes confusion between this species and the North American genus.

Hello Nemes
Great picture! Very nice composition and depth of field. The blurring of the wings is also great, giving a sense of the motion. Nice exposure, the colours and lighting are perfect.

Best regards Siggi

I too have dabbled with this tricky subject in the past, Nemes.
This Moth is so restless it never settles and uses its probocis while hovering over a flower.
You have got very good focus on its eye and body, but the wings are a blur of motion. Still, it is a captivating picture and makes a lovely composition with purple/blue flowers in it.
Well done and TFS.
Ram

Salut Septimiu,
Foarte bine surprins momentul, imagine clara si sharp. Felicitari.
Cele bune,
Gabi

Another capture "on-the-wing", almost side by side Nemes, yours is quite dynamic thanks to a relatively slower shutter speed. Good action, very good colours and a perfect composition. Who needs more in nature photography my friend?..
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Nemes.
We have a lot of these plants and sometimes I have met this impressive moss. Unfortunately, I could not take a nice shot of such subject. You have shared a well done and nicely composed in-flight picture. POV and timing as well as bright colours are fine. My best regards and TFS. Excellent work.
Alexei.

Hi Septimiu,

I have never seen a Hummingbird Hawk-moth except in pictures. A beautiful capture of him as he hovers over the pretty flowers. Excellent details with the blurry wings showing his movement. The colors are marvelous - so deep and rich that they remind me of a painting. Superb background and composition.
