Hello my Friends!
Today another picture from my archieve, this time from my 3rd trip to Romania in 2005 :>

This is a male of Mantis religiosa Linnaeus, 1758 (Mantodea: Mantidae) (in Polish: modliszka zwyczajna), probably the best known and also the biggest European species of mantis :>

It can be easy recognized because of black and white spots on 1st pair of legs :)

A lot of information about this species can be found in TN gallery, so there is no reason to provide them also here. In the other hand I think it is not a good idea to write a few words about Mantoda as a group :>

1. Number of species: ca. 2200 in 9 families

2. Higher diversity: in tropics

3. Mantodea in human culture:

- in China - one of the Kung Fu style is named after mantis - Tang Lang Quan

- in Africa - in Southern African mythology mantis is known as god in Khoi and San

- "everywhere" - the pose of hunting mantis suggests that this insect preys

Picture was taken during morning walk in Berca village, just next to the famous Muddy Volcanoes area. You can see part of this area here :>

If you are interested in other European Mantodea species, please feel free to watch some of them here and here. And moreover, please feel free to watch a "swinder" mantis - an insect which looks like combination of mantis and lacewing (here).

As always thank you for you time and visit!
Have a nice week!

Hi Radomir!

You present us this "killer" in a very pleasant and spectacular manner. The simplicity of the composition highlights the shape of this insect at best. The details are superb and thelighting is marvellous. The overall impression the picture generates is very pleasant. There's just a little problem in the sky and near the branch down on the right. Traces of postprocessing?

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Radomir!
A beautiful and interesting photo.
Good catch some excellent colors.
Best,
Adrian

In this picture, the mantis has a metallic sheen / glow and it adds to the picture, the exposure and colors is spot on. On the nit side , the picture is bit tightly framed ( but its my personal taste and need not be followed :-)
Good to see ur pictures and comment.
PS. I know that i have still not responded to ur request on the pics :-) sorry will do that once i get time.

Hi Radomir,
Perfect sharp capture of this big European mantis.
Our NZ species has a much larger head and thorax, and instead of the black and white spot, ours has a purple 'ear' on the front legs.
This one is more similar to the African mantis which is an alien invader here.
Soon I will post the two species together.
Cheers
Steve

Czesc Radek
Świetne macro. Wspaniały okaz, robi wrazenie. Jeszcze modliszki nie spotkałem na swojej drodze, mam nadzieje ze to sie nie dlugo zmieni.
Pozdrawiam Robert.

Czesc Radek!

Znasz moje zdanie o modliszkach - Ble :-) Tu jednak ten oblesny owad wyszedl calkiem ladnie :-) Podoba mi sie kompozycja bez zbednych dodatkow w tle i zielono-niebieska kolorystyka. Jak zwykle interesujaca notka. Fajnie, ze masz troche czasu na wrzucanie kolejnych zdjec.

Witaj Radku
Piekny kadr po przekatnej! Bardzo ladne swiatlo. Modliszka ostra w cudownych odcieniach zieleni.
Gratuluje i pozdrawiam - Roma
