[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
First of all, the meeting you observe on this picture didn't happen in Transsylvania... however it might have - mentioning blood drinking always brings to one's mind this land of count Dracula.

In reality I have photographed this couple in Romanian Bucovina, just a dozen meters from the Ukrainian/Romanian border checkpoint.

So, why I called this a "Transsylvanian meeting"? Because, I want to dedicate it to a person we (me and Krzysztof (cataclysta)) really met in Transsylvania a few days later - our dear TN friend Horia Bogdan! He drove for 7 hours from Oradea to visit us by the Bran Castle - the legendary stronghold of Dracula as described by Bram Stoker in his famous book. Horia spent with us a couple of days, during which we visited some very nice places. It was a great and very pleasant meeting (opposite to the pictured one :-)), another proof that besides sharing pictures, TN enables us to make great friends in real world! And here is the report from our meeting

But coming back to the picture:

You may observe a very dramatic moment when Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) get entangled in a web of Marbled Orb-Weaver (Araneus marmoreus), and was instantly stabbed by the spider.

Ruddy Darter is a large (wingspan up to 6 cm) and very common species in temperate regions, reaching from Europe to Siberia and North Africa. For breeding it prefers quiet bodies of water with semiaquatic vegetation such as rushes and reeds, however it can migrate kilometers away. This year, for some reason this species was particularly abundant in many areas.

Marbled Orb-Weaver is common, wide distributed in Holarctic and also large (up to 14mm long) spider species. It has an extremely variable colour patterns. Generally, two main colour forms can be found. The typical one has an orange abdomen with dark-brown marbling, the other one (var. pyramidatus) has creamy or white abdomen with a single dark blotch towards the rear. On the picture you may see the latter one.

And last but not least - the real prince Vlad Impaler alias Dracula has never lived in Bran Castle. In fact he was born in the medieval town of Sighisoara and his real stronghold was Poienari Castle located ca. 60 km south-west from Bran, on the other side of Fagaras Mts.

One more thing, posting this image late at night I have overlooked another take I have, hich probably has a bit better POV and more accurate exposure on the spider's abdomen. So, I post it to the workshop. Hope you enjoy!

Hello Michal,
Dramatic capture very well presented, with fantastic colours and great sharpness. Interesting and detailled note too, with nature, friendship and legend/history! Have a nice day,

Hi Michal,
A lovely group photo of Polish and Romanian nature photographers. A nice capture of this beautiful orb weaver spider and its prey. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Swietna fotka i super wprowadzenie do naszego spotkania z Horia. Fotka sie udala pomimo wczesnej pory na przygranicznym odludziu. Ladnie rozmyte tlo i dobra kompozycja. Moze bym zrobil lekkie higlights reduction aby zminimalizowac przepalenie na odwloku pajaka

Hi Michal and (i guess) welcome home :)

Glad to hear you've arrived ok and that you had a nice holiday and trip to my country. I'm only sorry i didn't have more time and less knowledge to show you around that area.
Also, thank you so much for this nice dedication and for your kind words. I also love the picture from the WS which actually came our really well :))
Last but not least, this is a great capture from Bucovina. I really find it interesting that this rather small spider has such a great appetite and strength to overpower a rather strong and violent dragonfly such as the ruddy darter. Great timing and details here on that!

Cheers, TFS and, again, thanks for the great time

PS: i will e-mail the photos of you soon :)
