Geranium Bronze (Cacyreus marshalli)

We came to a large display of Bougainvillea by a fine little harbour on the SE part of Lanzarote. The Bougainvillea hung in cascades from the steep rocky slope that caught the warmth of the sun.

I saw a small butterfly flying around the flowers. Then the sun went in and the butterfly settled up out of reach, but I saw with my binoculars that it was a Geranium Bronze. Though the distance was about 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) I thought it was worth trying a shot and to wait until the sun came out in the hope that it would settle closer.

But during the next 20 minutes the sun did not come out and instead of opening its wings to warm up it drew the forewings behind the hindwings as if it were going to rest for a longer time. So I took another shot. This more compact resting pose makes it less easily seen.

When the sun came out it flew higher up and disappeared.

The geranium bronze is an accidental import from S. Africa with the Pelargonium trade. As these ornamental flowers are grown all over the Mediterranean it has now spread over a large area, the red or pink flower flowers of its larval host plant decorating many houses and terraces of the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

This is the first time I have seen it, but it has been shown on TN several times. The camera was hand-held. After both images were heavily cropped they were selectively sharpened, but the distance has affected the quality somewhat.

Hi Ivan!

I first had to get used to that kind of presentation. You know that the aesthetic aspect is very important to me. But I have also to learn to look at pictures here on TN with a different eye, a more scientific one. Under these circumstances, together with the notes, your posting is very valuable and the fact that the quality has been a little bit affected becomes secondary.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Ivan,
Lovely captures and presentation.Excellent note too!
Thanks for posting.

Hello Ivan,
Very good presentation showing the wings' design ,the details on the bottom picture seem to be more sharp but still they are both well done

Hi Ivan,
Not too bad a capture really at that distance.
The second image does seem to be a bit clearer than the first. I wonder if it was quivering (as they do) when you shot the first one?
I thought the wings and body almost looked more moth like than butterfly like, but the antenna are a giveaway.
Well done on capturing it from so far away.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Ivan, Lovely collage of this showing two different views. Well shot Ganesh

You and Nagraj..although a different setting and pose...similarities being on the same page makes one o look twice..Your notion here has given me an idea..I wonder if they still make those tripod chairs which are light and can be carried easily. Another piece of gear, but would help in my infirmities...Very well seen Ivan. you certainly took good advantage of that trip.I really enjoyed Ullas beach!

Hi Ivan.
Very colourful for late November picture of a nice flower and cute its visitor. Both shots give clear idea of changeable weather. Colouration of the BG is different. Cropping is excellent as well as the collage at whole. My kind regards and TFS.

Hi Ivan,

I believe this is the first time I have seen a Geranium Bronze. Both views are wonderful - it's interesting to see the wings in the different positions. The colors and markings of this little butterfly are very pretty. An excellent presentation.

Ciao Ivan, great double withn this little butterfly in different pose, great colors and wonderful sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Ivan !
Beautiful picture, I like the comparison you made between the two resting poses, interesting behavior, I didn't know butterflies can do this - I learned something on TN, again ;-) Quality may be a bit affected, as you mention in your notes, but not a big poblem, the pictures remain excellent. I also like the changing BG - both pictures have been taken exactly on the same place the same, flower, but on upper photo there is a green BG, and on lower photo there is a brown BG. Very well done !
Valerie.
