Hawaian Beet Webworm (Spoladea recurvalis)

Just where we parked the car outside the hotel there were some weeds along the roadside.
As green weeds are unusual in Lanzarote they are worth examining, we had a closer look and were rewarded by seeing several of these small moths.

They flew up when disturbed, to soon settle back on the plant or close to. There must have been over 50 within 3 meters of the road verge. They had a wingspan of less than 2 cm (3/4 in) and varied a little in colour from pale to dark brown. Ulla and I got down to photographing them and as she used her Canon G9 I decided to try my long lens.

This is my best composed result but the one in the WORKSHOP is closer. I took them with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). These images were sharpened after cropping and size reduction.

Though I have specialised in the larger Macro Lepidoptera, butterflies and moths, I have never studied Micro Lepidoptera, but I knew that these were some species of Pyralid moths. As I could not find it on the internet I was grateful to have any further information.

Thank you Marie (Mariki) for the ID. It was clever of you to find it! I am most grateful!

It is found all over the world, especially the tropics and has most probably been spread by agriculture as it is a pest on beet crops. It looks like the 'weed' that it is on is a species of Beta. It has a variety of larval host plants. The name suggests its country of origin. In 2004 it was discovered in Belgium and is presumably found in other parts of Europe

They are spectacular Moths, Ivan, and you were right on the spot to capture them so well.
I like the bright colours on them. You have got both of them very sharp and clear.
Sorry for being irregular on TN; leaving the current job in a school and busy winding up.
Regards.
Ram

Hi Ivan,

This is a beauty, at first I thought you used a flash but I see you did'nt, this just sparkles, the colours are amazing, and the detail just leaps of the screen, and for the fact your useing a 300mm + a converter + hand held, just stunning.

Cheers Rick :)

Ciao Ivan,
Maurizio

hello Ivan,
Very striking Moth-species, which I never have seen before. It seems to be a pest, but to look at it ,it's a beautiful creature. And you took them both on a very contrasting green plant, which enhances even the special look of this beet Webworm.
Thanks for this instructive and interesting posting
Une belle journée
Anne

Hi Ivan.
You have pictured these small creatures with long telelens system perfectly. Excellent, crisp sharp of the insects and so nice weed. All is fine, especially rich colours of the insect and plants, precise level of an exposure and wonderful, very pleasant for eyes smooth BG. Perfect job. My best wishes for weekend.
Alexei.

This for some reason reminds me of my meanl moths...not sure why...perhaps the small thread there...of course not meal moths here...well captured....I have had meal moth problems before and they are impossible to get rid of...I carry lots of dried proteins around in hard jars to protect them..

Hi Ivan,

In other words, "Seek and ye shall find." I'm glad you took a look at the weeds because these moths are worth seeing. How nice to find a pair - with different wing positions. The shades of brown are beautiful - I love the patterns of the white stripes. Fine details, wonderful setting, background and composition. Wishing you a nice weekend.

Hello Ivan,
attractive, well describing presentation of that couple of Pyralidae moths. They seem to be tiny, and they certainly have been lively and hard to approach. I like the Pyralidae family for its surprising diversity of distinct patterns, small gems. Next summer, I will have an eye for that species shown by you if they also exist in Austria.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter
