Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus)
Swedish name: Smċspov

This is the first time I have posted an image of this species though it has been shown on TN several times.

I saw it flying across the road in front of the car while we were driving and noticed it had settled in the scrub by the roadside. I managed to back the car and saw it skulking along the hollow by the road. While the car warning lights were on we managed to take a few shots, most of which showed it well camouflaged against the dry vegetation. This is the best one to show it up against the pinkish volcanic grit.

I noticed the shorter bill, somewhat smaller size and dark brown stripe over the eye that differentiates it from the Eurasian Curlew.

This species of curlew is not very common but it is one of the most widespread species of waders in the world occurring as several sub-species that includes the Hudsonian Curlew of N. America . It breeds on heath and tundra in the arctic and sub-arctic areas of the northern hemisphere and overwinters mostly in the coastal areas of the tropics and sub-tropics.

This was taken at a distance of about 15 meters (50 ft) with the camera resting on the car door. After fairly heavy cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hallo Ivan
What a funny but rather unusual looking bird? I have heard of it before but this is the first time ( I think) that I have seen it. It looks as if its neck is twisted. Now that I look at it more closely it is actually a very pretty bird. The detail and shape of the plumage is really lovely, especially the feathers in the tailpiece. It is almost as if its eyeball is popping out. It reminds me of the black nickerball sweets we used to eat as children. The long bill is striking and I am sure it is any worm or insects nightmare.
Best regards
Anna.

Hi Ivan,

This Whimbrel is a very interesting looking bird. He reminds me of our Roadrunner but with shorter tail feathers and a long curved beak. The patterns of the plummage are quite lovely. He certainly is well camouflaged but stands out well with nice natural colors and sharp details.

Merhaba Dostum Ivan,

A fine looking bird with excellent camouflage characteristics Ivan, I'm sure it won't be this visible against the bushes at the top-left of your frame. Good capture displaying the bird in high definition from a lateral aspect. I think the all around colouring is a little on the "warm" side, tried to shift the colour scheme slightly towards the cooler side of the spectrum in my WS, hope you will approve...
Best regards,
Mehmet

Hi Ivan,
From your pictures I find thats where (Canary islands, Africa?) all waders have dissappeared form the UK. Excellent capture; great pose and composition, suitably shallow DOF, fine sharp details, natural habitat/BG.

Hello Ivan,
You took advantage of an opportunity that was presented to you and your rsults are fantastic. This Whimbril is well camouflaged but you have caught it in the open and mid stride. The image is sharp and naturally colored and displays that wonderful bill superbly. Thanks for the great posting Ivan.
Rick

'Whimbrel' sounds quite a mouthful for this curious wader you shot in Spain, Ivan.
For me, it is a new bird and hence focal point of my observation.
In this clear shot of the bird, I see an interesting and longish bill (you say it is shorter in comparison with that of some other Eurasian species) and a beautiful brown plumage.
It is a wonderful capture in the very authentic looking habitat.
Thanks for sharing it and all the best.

Hi Ivan
So strange to see this species in such arid conditions - I am so used to seeing it in the UK in cold, wet marshy areas! The wonderful light and your excellent camera work have really brought out the details of this bird.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hi Ivan,
this bird is beautiful and looks very elegant and special with the long beak.
Wonderful post, thanks

This is new for me... Ivan.
Extraordinary fellow due to his strange bill, I suppose.
Very good capture as you photographed this...Whimbrel while its moving. I also like its habitat. I don't know whether it is its habitat actually. Could be on vacation;-)..Anyway the camouflage is perfect..
Well done
