The type subspecies blackbird (Turdus merula merula) has a long tail (95 to 110 mm for males and 100-105 mm for females), measured between 23.5 and 29 cm long, with a wingspan of 34 to 38 cm, and weighs between 80 and 125 grams. The plumage of the adult male is entirely black and contrasts strongly with the ocular ring yellow or yellow-orange color with a yellow beak also. In winter, the circle around the eye becomes slightly darker brown and the beak. The legs are brown-black.The diet of blackbirds is omnivorous. They eat a variety of insects, worms and other small animals and also consume fruits and sometimes seeds.
