Marsh fritillary - Euphydryas aurinia

It was a fresh and overcast morning so this little beauty was trying to warm up to start the day.

A very attractive species which as the name implies likes damp areas, it is by no means exclusive to these areas though.
It is a very variable species with many named subspecies and forms.
The larvae are notable in their sociable habits. They spin a communal web near to large patches of their foodplant, Devils bit scabious. Their dark colouration and close proximity to one another means they can raise their body temperatures to a sufficiently high level to digest their food (about 35 °C), even though they are on the floor of a marsh. When they've finished this digestion process they disperse in ones and twos to eat more then return again to the commune.

Hola Felipe y Cristina,

Excellent wake-up image of this attractive little marsh beauty Felipe..
And I'm just waking up :)
Mary reminded me yesterday how my whole view of nature has changed since I picked up a camera with TN. And these are the images that have made it so.

Hola Felipe/Cristina,

Hi Filipe

A very beautiful macro shot from you, my friend, yet again.
This is a lovely butterfly species and you managed to get a splendid picture of it. The DOF here is very precise and made sure you only had the butterfly in focus, the BG being nicely blurred.
I also like your exopsure here and managed to keep all those beautiful colors so well saturated despite the overcast sky.
A terrific work especialyl if taken handheld.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Felipe,
This is really an interesting and very attractive Fritillary. The problem is that there are so many species, that it can be so difficult to identify them. Your picture is perfectly composed with good sharpness and pleasant colours.
best regards
Anne

Hi Felipe,
Beautiful markings on wings and colors are vivid. The image is well focused and exposed. Perfect picture with hand-held technique. TFS this fine image.
