Opium or "plant opium," binomial scientific name Papaver somniferum, is an herbaceous plant of the genus Papaver, belonging to the Papaveraceae family. Contrary to popular belief, is not found naturally in the Asian mountains. This poppy is commonly found in Europe, in calcareous soils, and mixed.
