Mayfly
Insecta > Ephemeroptera > Polymitardicae
Specie: Ephemera danica.

Did You Know?

Ephemeroptera are some of the oldest insects known.

There are around 2100 species known from the World.

Mayflies are the only insects to have two winged adult stages.

This species lives chiefly in lakes and fast flowing streams and rivers with a sandy or gravely bottom. The nymphs burrow into the substrata to form a tubular burrow and use their prominent gills to circulate the water in the burrow. Elliott, Humpesch and Macan (1988) classify E. danica as a 'collector-filterer', meaning it feeds by filtering fine particulate organic detritus from the water column. Ephemera danica usually has a two year life cycle, however recent work has shown that in the warmer waters of Southern England the species is able to complete its life cycle in one year.

Emergence of the adults takes place during daylight on the surface of the water or takes place partly or entirely out of the water on a stick, stone, or stem of an aquatic plant. The main flight period of E. danica has been recorded as between April and November. Females of this species carry up to 8300 eggs, which they lay by flying down to the water surface and releasing them in several batches. The female flies upstream and descends to the surface of the water releasing a few eggs by dipping the tip of her abdomen at intervals whilst flying over the water, or by actually settling on the water surface for short periods. The eggs sink to the bottom and are dispersed over a wide area. After several visits to the water surface the egg supply is finished and the spent female falls on to the water surface.

Felipe this is great. Very sharp details and magnificent colours with very good Dof and POv. I loved the shines on the wings.
Very well done.

Wow, this is sharp and clear ;-))
Focus spot on, good DOF, the entire critter within DOF range, excellent colours.
The only other thing to wish for would have been more separation from the bg, but with bugs this isn't always possible.

This is very nice Felipe.
Great clarity of detail, spot on focus and good use of fill flash.

Who needs a cumbersome DSLR kit when you can obtain this quality from a digicam, makes me wonder. Excellent sharpness and clarity. Superb composition, presentation and note. Quailty post Felipe, well done.

Hi Felipe!
As we can see your master of DOF not only with mushrooms ;-) Are you hypnotizing your subjects ;-) ? It is hard to find insect which is not moving during 1/125 ;-) Just joking! Great capture, very detailed and sharp. Insect is very interesting and looks great!

By the way, not for points but just for fun and to to compare, please feel free to look at "my version of mayfly" here.
TFS this beauty picture!
