Hello my Friends!
Long time ago I presented last picture of my favourite insect group, but today I'd like to come back to Cicindelidae saga! :>

Today the 10th part of tiger beetle saga (first nine can be see here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9)

This is a male of Calomera littoralis littoralis (Fabricius, 1787) (size ca. 14mm). It is a halophilic beetle known as West-Mediterranean endemic recorded in Europe only from South parts of France, Spain and Portugal, and in Africa from Northern areas of Morocco, Algieria, and Tunisia.

In Europe 4 additional subspecies of this taxon are known: nemoralis, conjunctaepustulata, fiorii, winkleri.

And as this species is "almost" an endemic to Western part of Europe only, this time something about European fauna of Cicindelidae :>

The species richness of Cicindelidae in Europe
There are some 41 species of tiger beetles noted from Europe, and more that 80 subspecies. As in case of many other insect group, the diversity of Cicindelidae increases when we come from the North to the South.

Three main biodiversity regugia of European tiger beetle biodiversity
1. Balkan Peninsula - 17 species
2. Iberian Peninsula - 12 species
3. Italian Paninsula - 13 species

All these three areas group ca. 95% of all European tiger beetle species and about 85% of subspecies!!!

Just to compare - Scandinavian Peninsula + Great Britain have only... 5 species!!!

Hi Radomir! How's it going?


What a fine clear shot of this specimen of Tiger beetle, Radomir! Magnificent!

I just had a brief look at the pictures of your Tiger beetle saga :) You seem to know a lot about them! Informative note, Academic(!).

Based on the other pictures, I think your imaging is also improving. This may be the best (clearest) image (shot) so far, altough it does look slightly under-exposed.

This may be caused by the use of Fill-flash, but I wouldn't worry too much about it, if I were you, because the shot is very well done :) Some cameras may/tend to under-expose if Fill-flash is used. Because of the slight under-exposure, colors are (now) in their shadow-range of luminance (120-), and as a result, color reproduction and imaging is not optimal.

So, what's needed here is a little Post-Production to compensate for the slight under-exposure to further improve imaging of this fine specimen of Tiger beetle.

That said, All in all a very good shot!

Hi Radomir. What a fantastic looking beetle. Your sharp focusing has given very fine detail over the whole body and head. It has lage eyes for its size, with such natural looking colours. very well done TFS.

A superb capture of this Tiger Beetle showing it very sharply in a fine pose. Beautiful light and colours too. They're obviously sun worshippers as so few species like it here up the north!

Yes indeed Radomir, a fine coincidence!

This macro of C. litoralis litoralis is a marvellous illustration of the species, the sharpness and DOF being ideal and portayed on the sand as if it were a set specimen with the legs perfectly displayed.

We have C. hybrida near us and it flies in July, but you have it in Poland of course!

Widze tu powrot do korzeni :-) Superszybki zawodnik, pieknie zlapany. Dobra perspektywa i szczegoly. Tlo wiadome - piasek :-) Moi zdaniem moznaby troszeczke rozjasnic zdjecie. Nie wiem czy mi sie wydaje, ale zwierzak chyba zgubil gdzies kawalek przedniej nogi?

You have great collection of pictures of the beetle. Few weeks ago I began to picture it too with my new prime telelens. I hope soon my shots will be so nice as yours. Excellent sharpness and details. Composition of the shot is spot on. May be shot is really underexposed a bit however, you have used all capabilities of your equipment.
