Mountain Argus, Aricia artaxerxes allous
Swedish name: Midsommar blåvinge, meaning ‘midsummer blue’

A species of butterfly not often seen on TN.

This is both a northern and S. European species of Lycaenid, that is absent from the northern part of continental Europe and S. Britain.

In Sweden it is widespread but absent from the very South, where it is replaced by Aricia agestis, the Brown Argus.
Like its close relative, it is one of those species of ’blues’ that is entirely brown.

The two species are not easy to distinguish when viewing the closed wing position but the male Mountain Argus has less orange spots on the upper side of the wings (see WORKSHOP)

The larval host plant is Helianthemum

This is a freshly emerged male resting on a Vicia flower. It flies in June- July

This was taken with the camera hand-held in the late afternoon. After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for levels and converted from RAW.
