[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

I am going to post a series of images of beetles dependent on newly felled logs as seen in the WORSHOP.
This pile consists mainly of Oak, with a few Aspen logs. These were felled on the island of Öland, the central part of which has deciduous forests, known to be rich in rare insect life.
Mostly females are attracted to the logs to lay eggs but their offspring is lost when the logs are taken to the saw mills.
This is one of the main reasons why these insects have become so rare!

Grey Tiger Longhorn, Xylotrechus rusticus

Swedish name: Gråbandad getingbock

Though this species is relatively common in Sweden and widespread in Europe, though absent from the UK, this is the first posting of this species on TN.

It is dependent on species of Populus, like Aspen and Poplar

The female attract males that pair with them, see WORKSHOP.

This was taken with the camera hand-held. After slight cropping, size reduction and slight sharpening the image was reduced in size and converted from RAW.

Hello Ivan

The 3 photos are excellent but the one
of the copula is the best one, with great
POV, DOF, suprb focus, sharpness, details,
in the news they talk that there is some
insects that are ravaging forest trees in
the Western Canada and here in Eastern Canada
some trees are in danger because of that insects,

thanks Ivan, for this information. and the photograph, as well. feeling sad. it's kind of communication gap between us and them.. life (sigh). the workshop had been very helpful.
thanks again.

Bonjour Ivan,
Very rich posting with the added note and the WS-pictures. A Longhorn beetle-species which we don't see often.

Hello Ivan,
When I first viewed your photo I thought it was a type of click beetle. You have captured this particular fellow in fine detail and beautiful natural coloration.
Your WS photos and informative notes are very interesting. I now know a little more about the Grey Tiger Longhorn, thanks to you!!

Interesting subject and beautiful photo Ivan! Good composition, wonderful colours and impressive sharpness! Interesting note too!
