THE TRAGEDY CAUSED BY A PILE OF DECIDUOUS TREE LOGS

This is the second posting of a series of images of beetles dependent on newly felled logs as seen in the WORSHOP of the first image in this series.
This pile consists mainly of Oak, with a few Aspen logs. These were felled on the island of Öland, the central part of which has deciduous forests, known to be rich in rare insect life.
Mostly females are attracted to the logs to lay eggs but their offspring is lost when the logs are taken to the saw mills.
This is one of the main reasons why these insects have become so rare!

Long-horned Beetle, Plagionotus arcuatus

Swedish name: Smalbandad ekbarkbock

This species is relatively common in Sweden and widespread in Europe, though absent from the UK. This is not the first posting of this species on TN.

It is dependent on species of Quercus, Oaks that have recently died or been felled. It can be found on a sunlit pile of recently felled oak logs in late spring and early summer. The eggs are laid on the bark and the larvae feed on the wood closest to the bark.

It superficially resembles a wasp to avoid predators and it moves in a similar way to wasps.

A lateral view is shown in the WORKSHOP.

This was taken with the camera hand-held. After slight cropping, size reduction and slight sharpening the image was reduced in size and converted from RAW.

Ciao Ivan, great macro of lovely wasp like a beetle, fine details, splendid light, excellent sharpness and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hallo Ivan
Thanks for sharing an image of this very interesting Smalbandad ekbarkbock with its striking colours and lovely details that is well seen. The patterns and colours on its shield reminds me quite a lot about the Blister beetle I once shared here on Trek Nature, but its paws and headpart is not similar to that of the Blister beetle. This image is very sharp and well composed.
Best regards and please send my regards to Ulla too. I miss her presence around the site.
Anna

Bonjour Ivan,
Anne

You are right it causes tragedy on wooden pieces. I have seen same or similar species here. But this is a great macro shot of Wasp-like Beetle from dorsal POV. Great details of sharp focus. DOF and diagonal composition very nice as like workshop.
Çok teşekkürler dostum. iyi geceler, iyi bir hafta sonu dilerim.
