Bee-wolf, Philanthus triangulum
Swedish name: Bivarg

This was taken at a sandy area on the island of Öland known for its special insect species.
This is a female hovering while looking for site to dig her burrow. A photo showing her about to start digging is shown in the WORKSHOP.

The males spend their time on flowers, both to feed on pollen and nectar and to wait for a female that is looking for bees. Not only does she paralyse a bee to feed her larvae, she also catches honey bees, bites off their heads and feeds on their juices and the nectar they bear to provide her with nourishment.

This species is found in most of Europe where there are sandy soils. It is not common in Sweden, being found mainly on the islands of Öland and Gotland and some sandy localities in the south of the mainland.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 40cm with the camera hand-held. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened

Hello Ivan

Excellent macro of this bee in hovering flight,
very fine POV with a little bit from above
and being framed diagonally in the image
it gives dynamism to the image, with that POV
we also see form of the bee and it patterns,
with great focus, sharpness, and details, TFS
