Riddarskinnbagge, (Lygaeus equestris).

As this species of True Bug has no English name I use the Swedish.

Both the Swedish and scientific names refer to the dorsal cross marking, that looks like the heraldic emblem of a knight of the Crusades.

They are usually slightly longer than one cm.
This species belongs to the family Lygaeidae, or seed-eating bugs. Several species have been shown on TN and this species has been posted twice before.
Anne Gatlen (Anel) posted anther species in this genus

Some, like this one in this genus, are warning-coloured, which shows that they are poisonous. Indeed the host plants, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria and Adonis vernalis, are poisonous and presumably so are their seeds.

These two are in copulo on the flower buds of the more common host plant, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, a member of the Milkweed family.

They are locally common and found where their host plants occur, mainly along the coasts of SE Sweden. I have been unable to find out about its distribution in Europe

This was taken with my equipment hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened

Hello Ivan,
Fantastic photo of these bugs in a difficult, creative pose :-). Splendid colours and brilliant sharpness and details. Great DOF, POV and OOF BG.

Beautiful picture of these mating 'True Bugs', Ivan.
The image is well composed. As for its name in Swedish, the allusion to mythical Crusaders in relation to the markings of the backs of these cratures is quite interesting.
TFS and regards.

Hej and Good Morning Dostum Ivan,

Marvelous job as always, the colour of this love-making pair really suits well to make them stand out against their surroundings. Incredible details and focus too.
TFS and have a nice Sunday!

Hi Ivan
Congratulation for this lovely pair of Lygaeus equestri.
Perfect details and great position!

Hello Iven!
Very nice pair of bugs in copula. I like acrobatic position of these insect, it was not easy to photograph it keeping good DOF.
Very interesting and informative note. In Poland this species is named "rycerzyk" what means "small knight", so once again I can note similarities among insect national names :)
Thank you for showing this insect and have a nice Sunday!

PS. Just for fun, please look here, the some species but from a little different point of view :)

Hi İvan,

Ciao Ivan. Wonderful coloured and sharpended compo. Brig colours and interesting liht's management. Well done.

Creo que este también lo tenemos por aquí Ivan. Estas especies insectos Lygaeidae son muy típicos en todos los lugares a la vez que bastante desconocidos.
Realismo en los colores y una luz excelente.
Saludos y buen Domingo: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Ivan,
Very interesting and not easy shot to realise with the special and acrobatic position of the two Lygaeidae. It is true that color and patterns remind the dress of medieval Crusaders. We have this species too here and in Valais.
I have seen a lot of Heteropterae lately, especially very tiny ones. I will brig some of them later.
I wish you and Ulla anice week,

Hello Ivan,
This bug looks rather like one I saw in my pumpkin patch trying to lay eggs there and destroy my crop! :) All the same, hard to deny its beauty -- and I love how you have captured these two. Like they're the only living things on the planet. Excellent composition, clarity and color.
Cheers, Penny

Hi Argus,
Looking at your 'riddarskinnbagge' I am in doubt of my ID for my latest uploud. But I see my bug has no white mark on the back, but still...
These two look great taken from a nice position and great use of the light. And because of the different pose we can see the belly and the back.
