Dingy Skipper (Erynnis tages)

Swedish name: Skogsvisslare, meaning ‘forest skipper’.

It has been shown several times on TN, though this is my first time.

This species is locally common in most of Europe and occurs in one generation per year.
In Sweden it occurs in the S. and C. parts of the country and is absent in the extreme S and N.

It flies in May and June with the eggs being laid on Birds-foot Trefoil, Lotus corniculatus.

In flight this skipper appears very dark, almost black, but when settled it rests with the wings outspread to absorb heat. The mixture of greys and browns give an impression of dullness, which explains the English name, but close inspection reveals a fine pattern on the wings.
Like other skippers it rests at night with the wings held together upright

Fresh specimens are hard to photograph to achieve the right sharpness and colours as the wings tend to reflect the light with a shine. The bright sunshine caused me to underexpose by one stop.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters with my long lens camera hand held.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

nicely rendered, this not-so-dull Erynnis. In your picture a whole set of different brown tones become evident, a golden collar to boot. Your high technical standards of photography apply as usual.
Best regards

Hola Ivan,

Hi Ivan

Hello Ivan,
what a name, but you make it very interesting. Nice silvery colours and the sharpness is so good.
The hairs around its wing is so detailed.
nice presentation that contrast to its name.

Hello Ivan,
This summer I haven't seen skippers yet. Yours is taken very well. Although one have modest colours but look very beautifully with exactly spread wings.
Regards, Pawel

Bonsoir Ivan,

HI Ivan,
this skipper is beautiful and first I had to google for the German name, because I've never seen this specimen before. Kronwicken-Dickkopffalter, that's the Germany name. But I also never heared this name ;-)
So thanks that you introduced this new one for me, I like the coppery glance and this wonderful pose. Also excellent quality.
Thanks, warm regards

I watched the wedding of Victoria and Daniel the whole afternoon, ooohhh, wonderful. Have you both been there? I were looking on TV to see you ;-)

Hello Ivan,

A very impressive shot from the top perspective.
Excellent sharp details that make the wings completely obvious.
Composition, light and clarity so skillfully crafted.
TFS, Best Regards.

Hello Ivan,

Here is a picture top view which gives us many details of this moth. The sharpness is successful as usual!
The vibrant colors are just (probably for camouflage).
Good document!

Hello Ivan,
An excellent shot of this well camoflauged little skipper. I would imagine he would be almost impossible to spot when perched on the bark of a tree. Very fine detail and just the right exposure. well done!!

Hej and Good Morning dostum Ivan,

A very nice presentation of the Dingy Skipper which is also a novelty for me, I particularly like the lighting in this. The top POV was a good choice. Excellent sharpness, with nice blurr BG for separation.
Have a nice day/WE MF.

Hello Ivan.
Most skippers around my place are dull :-(
The sharpness of the catch is amazing and the antenna and full spreading wings are in the same plane. A wonderful image for TN.
Thanks and have a joyful Christmas.
