Before the onset of our hot summer a friend and I travelled 400 km (250 miles) to photograph this rare species of blue butterfly

Chequered Blue (Scolantides orion)

Swedish name: Fetörtsblĺvinge, meaning 'stonecrop Blue'

We found this female quite early in the morning resting where she spent the night. At first her wings were tightly closed. We waited for the morning sunshine to warm her up. Her wings then took the position in this main image before opening her wings. See the WORKSHOP.
The female is a little larger than the male, is less blue and slightly darker.

This species is rare and the nominate race orion occurs in a few places in the coastal areas south of Stockholm. It is red-listed classified as endangered. This is the second time this sub-species has been posted on TN (I posted an image of the male two months ago) and only the third time as a species.

The larval host plant is Sedum album and it flies from mid-May to mid-June. The habitat is rocky with soils that support a fine flora including the larval host plant. It spends the winter in the pupal stage.

It is also a rarity in S, C, and SE Europe where it occurs as the subspecies lariana.

This was taken with my long lens hand held at a distance of about 1.8meters (6 ft.)
The image was moderately cropped and after size reduction it was selectively sharpened

Hi Ivan,

You must have a wonderful network to hear about the presence of a rare butterfly 250 miles away! It's always such a pleasure to see your rarities - I would never get to see them otherwise. You captured this perfectly to show off the beautiful wing markings and elegant colors. It is sensational against the dark background. The workshop showing the opened wings is equally magnificent.

Hola Ivan,

Hi Ivan. Conratulations on this first upload on TN.
This is also beautiful with nice details and composition. Thanks for sharing.
Best Regards

Slav Ivan,
A wonderful macro of this rare butterfly species, great sharpness, colors and excellent details.TFS.
Bi slavęn germ,

Good morning Ivan,

Travelling 250 miles to find this rarity shows great commitment, and I wonder if you drove through the night in order to catch her sleeping, walking up and eventually flying away. She is such a rare beauty, with fine details and beautiful markings against a perfect BG.

I enjoyed reading your description, and looking at the workshops as well. Interestingly enough, when I 'Googled' the Latin name, I found this photo and also your photo of the male form. There are only 2 pages referring to this rare butterfly, and most of the references are yours!

I also noted that you used a long lens - that seems to be the way forward for me. I can rarely get close enough to butterflies in Norway.

Warm greetings, Amelia

merhaba Ivan dostum
I missed this great shot since I was in field trip in this date. I can visit it newly.
Scolantides orion is very beautiful lycaenid and presents in Turkiye too. Unfortunately I have not seen it yet.

Coloration and light using great. sharp details and POV/DOF also very nice. dark BG nicely contrasted to its light colors.
