Green-underside Blue (Glaucopsyche alexis)

Swedish name: Klöverblåvinge, meaning ‘Clover Blue’.

This is the first time I have posted this species of Lycaenid butterfly, though it has featured on TN several times before.
I took this male at the same place I took the Chequered Blue, that required a 400 km (250 miles) trip.

Like most Blues it is best identified by looking at the underside of the wings. The turquoise blue-green powdering on the hind-wing varies but the large black spots on the forewing are characteristic and easily separate it from the Small and Mazarine Blues.

I enclose an image showing this male resting with the wings open in the WORKSHOP.

The female has a broader black border on the forewing that varies in breadth.

It is widespead and fairly common in most of Europe except the UK. In Sweden it occurs sparsely in a band across the southern central part of the country. The larval host plant is Lotus corniculatus and other Leguminous plants

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6ft) in the morning light. What in my opinion is a correct exposure of the butterfly has caused a dark BG.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened

Good morning Ivan, beautiful shot of this clover blue with nice details and composition.
TFS and regards,
Bahadır

Hi Ivan,
Simple yet very nice photo - first or last in the row (of Blues), an interesting and effective image. Great sharpness - a pity sunshine didn't really help You while doing the photo. WS photo has better colors - but I think this same thing happened to me with my today upload. :(
Tfs the pic and the note, friendly regards, László

Bonjour Ivan,
Une présentation très fine légèrement en diagonale et avec des couleurs très subtiles. Une espèce que je n'ai pas encore publiée non plus. Très beau papillon avec sa coloration bleue au bas des ailes. J'aime beaucoup.
Meilleures salutations

Hi Ivan,

Two more beautiful Blues to add to your collection. This male is posed so nicely showing off it's delicate beauty. The colors and details of the wings and body are excellent. The simplicity of the composition is elegant. He looks wonderful against the green. I enjoyed seeing the female in the workshop in the lovely open-winged pose.

Jane

Hola Ivan

Gracias nuevamente por tu ayuda.

Una imagen muy agradable, de esta mariposa en esa especie de hoja en diagonal, y con ese fantastico brillo en su ala. Realmente bonita.

Un saludo de Antonio

You have given us a vast variety of butterflies in the Blues family, Ivan.
This one is a marvellous capture of the species that justifies its name. That subtle sprinkle of green at the base of its wings is like ornamentation adding to the beauty of this specimen. The OG green plain BG does wonders in making the subject stand out beautifully.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Well taken macro, good detail, nice comp, excellent close up.

iyi akşamlar Ivan dostum
Glaucopsyche alexis is a very beautiful lycaenid and I also like it very much. I have seen it in several times.
you greatly captured it resting on green leaf from lateral POV. sharp details of focus great. dark spots, especially ones on forewing, show it very beautiful. symetric feets and striped antenna also very nice.
I also looked at the workshop. it is also great with open wings. nicely composed and presented with good informative notes.
çok teşekkür ederim dostum. sağolasın.
God kväll
Ahmet

What a rare shot, Ivan!
I've never seen the 'green' underside actually.
You illustrate it perfectly!
Bravo!
