Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth - Hemaris fuciformis

This is a day-flying Moth of the family Sphingidae found in open woodlands and clearings. It has a wing size of 38-48 mm. It flies during May-June when it can be seen seeking nectar from flowers. Here it is hovering around a Viper’s Bugloss. Other flowers it seems to like are Sticky Catchfly. The larvae feed on Honeysuckle and Galium species.

It is found in Europe (except Northern Scandinavia), North Africa and Central and Eastern Asia.

This was captured in a forest clearing with plenty of Viper’s Bugloss. The Hawk-moth was moving rapidly around a small area staying briefly on each flower but all the time hovering. Not easy to capture but I was pleased to get a few captures with my compact. It was taken from a distance of about 1 metre with the camera handheld. I’be cropped it and levels have been adjusted.

The Sw. name is 'Humlelik dagsvärmare'.

Kind regards,

Ciao Ulla. Exciting flying capture in good detaisl and brilliant colours.

Hi Ulla,
very interesting photo of this specie in flight. Maybe sharpness is not perfect, but it's not easy to take sharp picture with such a specie in flight. On the other hand I can feel a dynamism of this situation.
Have a nice weekend,

Lovely image even though the bee is not in focus, the blur of the movement is beautiful and the extending proboscis towards the flower captured well. tfs.

God dag, Ulla.

Nice in-flight capture of the moth. The slight fuzziness delivers the sense of motion. The Echium, too, is lovely!

Have a pleasant weekend,

Hello Ulla,
Yes, very difficult indeed to get good photo's of this kind. Very well done under the circumstances. A beautiful image.

Bello conjunto y buenos colores. Quizá aún falto más velocidad de disparo.
Un abrazo Ulla: J. Ignasi.
