Camberwell Beauty - Nymphalis antiopa

An unexpected and most welcome visitor to our garden the other day! Over the past years we’ve only seen it briefly a couple of times while flying along the edge of our garden which backs on to a strip of Pine forest. This time it flew around the garden and settled a few times on the trunk of our apple tree and I had time to get the camera out before it flew off. It was below the leafy branches and in the shade so I had to use flash.

It is a woodland species that occurs in most parts of Sweden, less common here in the south, but numbers fluctuate from year to year due to climatic conditions. It flies from July to October and after hibernation in April-May.

It has its name from the district of Camberwell in London where it was first found. In America the name for this showy species is Mourning Cloak, the same as in Sweden ‘Sorgmantel’.

This was taken from a distance of 1 metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hallo Ulla
What a beauty is this Camberwell Beauty! Its dark colours in contrast with the blue patterns and yellowish border is spectacular. Looking at the butterfly in its typical opened winged position against the trees bark is lovely. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Ulla,
my congratulations to seeing and to capturing such a rare visitor in your garden! Would have to walk for miles and would need a lot of good luck to find Antiopa at all. Well documented in its habit of sitting head down the shadow. Quite difficult to find the right amount of light for the deeply contrasting colours in the wings of that beautiful species. Thank you!
With best regards,
