Storfläckigt bandfly, Noctua interposita

The Swedish name means 'large-spotted banded noctuid'. As this species of Yellow Underwing moth does not occur in the UK, there does not seem to be an English name. There are two other similar species in the UK that are widespread in Europe.

This species is a recent arrival in Sweden, having been first noted in the year 2000.

It is basically an Eastern European species that is spreading westwards. The larvae feed on various herbs and grasses and the adults fly in late summer.

The Noctua genus of Noctuid moths is strictly nocturnal but these moths are attracted to light, like this one was.

This one had landed on our rock garden, luckily showing a little of the hind wings which they normally don't show when resting.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my camera and long lens supported on a cheap tripod in partial morning cloud.

After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW to JPEG.

This is the first time this species is shown on TN.

Hi Ivan,
Excellent photo of this interesting Moth species, first time on TN, congratulations !

It is a truly remarkable first picture of this species of Moths on TN, Ivan. Congratulations!
What I adore in this picture is the visibility of both sets of this Moth's wings. The inner ones look so delicate and beautiful and evoke in my mind the image of a light yellow saari with an artistic brown border.
Thanks and regards.

Bonjour Ivan,
Interesting to read that this Moth arrived just lately to your country. Amazing because it is a species more settled down in the South.
Fine and natural shot and interesting note.
Un grand merci
Amicalement

Hi Ivan.
Perfect macro shot of this moth. This species of moth Noctua I see first time around my house I saw another very similar type of Noctua pronuba. Your capture is exceptional, I like the yellow color underside of the wings. Composition, focus and exposure are very well done. Have a nice weekend.
TFS and best regards
Milos

Hi Ivan,

First of all congratulations for the superb photo and for the TN-debut. Incredible sharpness / details, nice colors and perfect exposure. My hats off of you again, Sir!

At the same time I must say your work, no matter your photographed subjects are birds, insects or something else, is always very inspiring for me. I'm always looking for local (Hungarian) occurence of the species, paralel with looking at your pic, searching for local names etc. So, now: in my country this moth is fairly common, local name is Köztes sárga-fűbagoly - and unlike many other b-fly and moth species, not protected by the local laws. Although your well written notes and your fabulous photos are more important for me than the Hungarian datas for you, I hope my little off-topic critiques on your photos aren't so boring for you. Thanks for sharing this superb piece, and for the inspiration. Friendly regards, László

Hi Ivan,
good POV of this species of Noctua!
TFS & have a nice weekend

I find it quite interesting about these moths being nocturnal, yet attracted to light. Is that ironic? At very least it gives one pause to consider the grand scheme of design. Certainly it is within the scope of science to explain but explanations do not satisfy all. It gives some thoughts to wonder upon. Fine work you continue to do Ivan. Be Blessed.
