Camberwell beauty /Mourning Cloak , Nymphalis antiopa

Swedish name: Sorgmantel. This means the same as the N. American name, mourning cloak.
The English name is owing to its discovery in a suburb of London in the early nineteenth century. In the UK it is a rare arrival from the continent.

This striking species occurs in most of Sweden, though it is rare in the very South where I live and it is not particularly common anywhere. It occurs in most of N and C. Europe, as well as N. America, especially Canada.

This one was exceptionally early. It usually emerges in July/August to over winter in piles of logs or hollow trees, but never in buildings like Peacock or tortoiseshell butterflies. After hibernation the creamy yellow wing borders as seen here, pale to almost white.

The larval host plant is mainly willow and its numbers fluctuate partly because of parasitizing of the caterpillars.

Notice how the blue spots vary in colour from blue to lilac according to the angle viewed.

The typical habitat is at the edge of conifer woodlands where there are willow and birch trees. It is not attracted to flowers, but sweet rotting fruit and the sugary sap from damaged trees are an attraction. Here it is probing for sap on our apple tree. A rare visitor to our garden.

It was taking with my long lens using my cheap tripod as support at a distance of about 3 meters (10ft) After slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Here the mixture of light and shade causes a 3-D effect. Though I prefer the main image, a less complicated view with a better BG can be seen in the WORKSHOP.

Bonjour Ivan,
Anne

Hello Ivan,
It's very beautiful species but result of taking this one very often is far from very good. Colours and pattern are attractive but here aren't too good. Maybe it need special soft light. I've never been satisfied with my attempt taking this species.
Best regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan.
Very beautiful macro shot with very good angle view. It is the largest species of butterfly in my country. He is a regular visitor to my garden, but this year I not see him, unfortunately. Your capture is really beautifully composed with the interesting effect of light and shadow. Really like the capture of natural colors mainly blue color on its wings. Amazing butterfly and this one is in great shape. Well done, as well as a picture in the workshop. However, the main one I like more. Thank you for sharing.
Best regards
Milos

Realmente bonita esta mariposa que yo aún no he podido fotografiar nunca.
Buenos colores. El conjunto se ve algo distorsionado.

Hello Ivan,

this is the summum of all butterflies, and you took the shot in your garden! Fantastic lighting brings the unusual colors out. That seems to a one-in-a-lifetime shot. My compliments!

I like the title Ivan. It gives some mystic quality to the image. Nice to mix Of liighting and textures once in a while. Applause on this one buddy.

Bonjour Ivan,
Je suis en admiration devant ta photo. La posture et les couleurs sont vraiment magnifiques.
Je suis un peu jaloux, car je ne le rencontre pas souvent, et il est régulièrement abîmé.
merci beaucoup

Antiopa delightfully well balanced betwen light and shadow - a very artistic presentation with fascinatingly rich colours and high emotional appeal. Great work, I like it very much.

Hello Ivan,
I have never seen butterfly with this type of markings on the wings. The spreading wings and downward perch exhibits fine details for closer inspection.
