Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth, Hemaris fuciformis

Swedish name: Humlelik Dagsvärmare, meaning ‘bumblebee-like day-flying hawk-moth’.

It occurs in S. Sweden where it is not common but can be seen in flowery meadows during the second half of May and first half of June. The flowers of Viper's Bugloss (Echium vulgare), shown here, are very attractive to this species of Hawk-moth.

It is widespread in Europe including S. Britain. It the south it occurs as two generations and the larval host plants include various species of Lonicera.

This was taken at a distance of about 2 meters (6 ft 6 in) with the camera hand held. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

You have done a great job of capturing this Hawk Moth while it hovers in the air, Ivan. It is a difficult job and I have tried my hand at it only once or twice with limited success. At 1/2000, you have got the curled up proboscis and the antennae in perfect focus. Thanks for sharing this marvellous capture.

Bonsoir Ivan,
Very fast shutterspeed for this beautiful Hawk-moth! Photographers have to be very fast too! The greenish background is just ideal to show the insect. It seems to like Echium species.
What concerns my" Arbre ŕ perruques" it can be found from south of Europe east until China. I assumed that the English name "Eurasian" smoketree was describing well the distribution.
Have a nice evening Ulla and you
Amitiés
Anne

Hi Ivan,

sniff, sniff, the kind of great picture I would like to make! My compliments for the extremely difficult daylight shot. Despite the large aperture you got the animal well focussed.

Thanks for this one. My best regards,
Dietrich

Hello Ivan.
I have little success in capturing insets in flight. You have done well with very good details around the head and antennas. The approach is well seen with the flower to land on. Job well done and thanks for sharing.
Regards.
