Ulla and I have now moved to a flat 200 meters from the Baltic on the outskirts of the town of Kalmar, close to the island of Öland that is famous for its special wildlife.
This shot was taken before we decided to sell our house and all the bother that goes with it.

White-letter Hairstreak, Satyrium w-album

Swedish name: Almsnabbvinge, meaning ‘elm hairstreak’.

The English name refers to the w-shaped white line on the hind-wing.

Like the Green Hairstreak this species is only seen resting with the wings closed.
As the Swedish name suggests it is entirely dependent on Elm, in Sweden Ulmus glabra.
Not only is Elm the larval host plant but it spends most of its life near elm. Since the advent of Dutch elm disease it has become less common and more confined to where elms survive.
Fortunately it is often the case that though the main tree dies the roots send up shoots that are not attacked by the disease-spreading bark beetle until the trees are large enough.

This species is often to be found taking nectar from flowers such as thistles but it also flies around the crowns of deciduous trees that have leaves covered by sticky honeydew, secreted by aphids. This one was seeking nectar on the flowers of a Cruciferous species that flowers throughout the summer and is common on sandy soils.

It flies during the whole of July and into August and is to be found locally where there are elms nearby in most of Europe and S. Sweden.

I had to crouch low to get this shot with my long lens hand-held.

After slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.
