[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Mayfly, a species of insect belonging to the order Ephemeroptera (Greek ephemeros = living a day and pteron = wing.

The nymphs can moult between 12 to 50 times and take over 2 years before they reach the adult stage. Mayfly nymphs can be told from those of stoneflies in that they have three ‘tails’ instead of two, like the adults. When the nymph is fully grown it rises to the surface to moult into the subimago stage. This is when they become easy prey for fish, which is why many do this at the same time: they then increase chances of survival.

Mayflies are special in that they have two adult stages. The subimago is called a ‘dun’. The dun soon sheds its skin to finally become an imago or ‘Spinner. Mayflies can fly in both these stages. The spinner lives long enough to mate and lay eggs, which is usually no longer than a day. Many spinners die on the surface of the water to become food for trout and other fish. Some females swim down to the bottom to lay their eggs.

This species was found near a river and as it is brown it is likely to be in the dun stage. I found several skins left by these duns after they changed to become spinners and some of these skins were taken by damselflies.

This shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters and at ISO 200. After cropping the image was treated to adjust levels, sharpened and treated for noise using NeatImage.

Hi Ivan,
nice image of this Mayfly.
I like the unique composition.
Great sharpness, detail and clarity.
Those three tails are amazing!
Well done,

I remember these from my fist mass encounter back in 1962 or 3 when I was mowing a tall grass in the area of Grayling Michigan and the Au Sable River. These came up out of the grass in clouds and covered everything...I had no idea of what to do as they were filling the air in every direction....
A nice reminder of a strange time in my life. I frequented the area quite often. I canoed 3 and 4 day trips down the river, fishing for Rainbow Trout..fly fishing from the banks and nobody else around...it was quite the time...all this from you picture...wow..

Dear Ivan,
What an amazing species you present here!!
I see the very interesting long three tails. :-)
You've captured very unique Mayfly with excellent details and focusing.
And also, perfect POV & composition here as usual. :-)
Very well presented with your informative note as well.
TFS and Best wishes,

Hello Ivan,
Very nice shot on this tiny Mayfly. Sharp image and detail to appreciate. Appropriate blurred background to stand out the main subject. Very well done and tfs.

Nice sharp image. However i would prefer a lower exposure to cut out the excess reflection from the abdomen.
Best regards,

Hi Ivan,
Very familar with these Mayflies, sometimes my husbands ship gets coated with them!! Crunchy when you step on them!!
Good shot and lots of great interesting info on these fellas TFS

Hi Ivan,

I seem to be the only one who never saw a Mayfly before! A wonderful macro with superb details. The triple tail is amazing. Beautiful composition with the green leaf and perfect background.

Ciao Ivan,
complimenti per questa bella foto.
Gli Ephemeroptera non sono facili da fotografare e non appaiono spesso su TN.
Tu sei riuscito a mostrarci questi insetti in tutta la loro bellezza con un'immagine superba.

Hi Ivan,
A perfect presentation for its composition, colours and note.
TFS, José M.

Muy bonita Ivan, además no son muy comunes estos insectos en Tk, por lo que es interesante poder observar alguno. Desde luego este insecto tiene muchos elementos que hacen difícil su captura fotográfica. Buen trabajo.

Hello Ivan
Nowadays I have not enough time and so I cant visit your new posts. I'd like to write about this posts. Other new ones also great. But it tells more than a photograph.
Firstly I like very much this with great focus, coloration, composition.
One day, only one day very important as like its adult period. Average of human life around 30.000 days, but mayflies have only one or several days.
Thanks for sharing
I wish you and Ulla happy new years and merry christmas with your family.

Hi Ivan,
A not common but likeable composition, with main subject almost in a corner and without cuts in its tail. Details and focus excellents. A good job
I wish the best for you and Ulla in 2008
