[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I kept this one in my archives because I was not pleased by the overall sharpness, but as a storm prevents photography this weekend, I thought it might be worth posting after all.

Despite the name, this Burnet moth (Zygaena viciae) is extinct in the New Forest and now only occurs in the UK as a subspecies in Argyllshire.

In Sweden it occurs sparsely in the S.East. The Swedish name, when translated, means the Lesser Burnet Moth.
It is indeed smaller than most Burnet moths and can also be told from other five-spotted burnets by the more rounded wings and the sparcer density of black scales on the wings. The adults are avid flower visitors and like all burnet moths they fly slowly, being protected from predators by their striking warning colours.

The main larval host plant in Sweden is Bird's Foot Trefoil) (Lotus corniculatus), from which the larva also concentrates poisonous substances that remain when it becomes adult.

Like other burnet moths in Sweden it is red-listed. It is widespread in Europe but not common.

This image was taken on a hazy day with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. After some cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
Beautifully captured of this beautiful moth. I like the details written all over the subject and very well managed depth eliminating all the busyness. Well done and I like it.

Hi Ivan.
Your model is simply charming and composition (as well as the subject at whole) is perfect. Colour tone and smoothness of the BG are so pleasant and underline the beauty of the moth and stem. DOF is shallow quite a little bit but this is price of close distance. My best regards and TFS. Fine job.
Alexei.

Hello Ivan,
Despite your concern regarding the overall sharpness of this moth, its left antenna and right wing give a very good idea on its pattern and coloration. Lighting is very good and the diagonal composition over an OOF green BG is really pleasant. TFS.

Definately worth posting!
This is a real gem Ivan.
It is so simple yet powerful at the same time.
It is just a moth on a blade of grass with a plain BG but the colours are so bold and vibrent! The red and black stands out like a sore thumb against the green surroundings.
Yeah it is a bit noisy but the photo as a whole is really splendid!
Thanks for sharing this.
Regards,
Joe

Hi Ivan,

A very pretty butterfly with lovely colors - reminds me of a ladybug. The red and black markings are beautiful. Nice composition on the slightly diagonal stalk. At least your bad weather is allowing us to see some of the work in your archives.

Hello Ivan,
I can't remember that I saw life specimens of viciae. Also, at TN the species is rather rare. I found one picture of an adult and of a caterpillar, both taken by Chris Jonko.
Geometric and colour composition of your picture is very attractive. Focus and sharpness of the frontal parts of viciae are pretty good.
As in my previous picture, conditions do not allow to achieve technical perfection. Nevertheless, presentations of rare species and phenomena are very valuable.
Best wishes, Peter

Ciao Ivan,
con la tua foto sei riuscito a trasmettere tutta la delicata bellezza di questa splendida Zigena.
La posizione leggermente in diagonale e lo sfondo verde omogeneo e morbido ne mettono in risalto tutta la colorata livrea.
Grazie,
Marcello

Hi Ivan. You asy it coloud be sharper but it a very good shot of this beautiful looking moth. you have captured the detail and markings so well. good natural colours showing the red spots. well done TFS.
Nick..

Well perhaps the whole body isn't in sharpest of sharp but I would have certainly overlooked it had you not pointed it out..It isn't a glaring problem at all...and is made up for by the usual markings and colour...Very nicely done..I hope you are getting your snow you had hoped for in winter:-)

Very beautiful photo. Great contrasting colours. Very sharp. A bit noisy in the BG, specially round the moth. But the photo is marvelous with a good composition and POV.

Hello Ivan, I wish my pictures were all as sharp as this one! Beautiful picture, Ivan, the butterfly contrasts very nicely with the blurred background and light is beautiful, it even plays with the antennas. We even see the transparency of the wings! Thank you,

Francine

Hello Ivan,

Very nice picture of this beautiful moth. Very good composition. Good sharpness and very nice natural colours.
Well done,
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Ivan. Nice diagonal composition with a lovely neutral background that gives the insect a dramatic appearance. Regards. Klaudio.

This is one of the most spectacular moths in the world, Ivan, and you have done a good job of it.
The noise factor is of not much consequence in a shot like this where the essential features of the subject are well highlighted.
May I dare a Workshop with your permission?
Let me try using lasso and Gaussian blur on some bits in the BG you left unattended, unintentionally I suppose.

Ram

Hej Ivan,
it's perfect days to dig in arch ivies ;-)
No storm up here so far maybe it will take another direction.
Very fine picture of the beautiful insect, the details and sharpness are really good. Maybe the DOF is a wee bt shallow but it standout great against the nice BG.
Well done.
Ha en skön helg, hoppas att ni får en fin Söndag.

Hello Ivan,
a very nice, well composed presentation of this rare burnet.
I like the minimalized composition, the distinctly contrasting colours, and the slightly inclined point of view.
Apart from a few untreated noisy areas on the BG that obviously came in through selective postwork sharpening, this is a perfect image to me. Interesting notes, too.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Hello Ivan,
Yes, it's very interesting species. I'm not sure if you've seen the caterpilar of this species? If you would like - please go here to see it ;-)
