Brilliant Emerald (Somatochlora metallica)
Swedish name: Metalltrollslända, meaning ‘metal dragonfly’

We visited a wet meadow nature reserve along a small lake, known for its orchids and rare insect life. This Brilliant Emerald was patrolling a small drainage ditch to occasionally settle. As it usually settled among the vegetation it was difficult to photograph without a busy BG, but when it landed on a rush that was hanging a little over the water I took the opportunity to take this before it flew away to resume patrolling.

As it would often hover for a second or so I also tried in-flight shots, but as I have already posted a couple of these that are better, I’ll stick to this one resting.
This is a male, the female having no narrow waist.

It can be told from the Downy Emerald by its shining green body, that of the Downy Emerald being a bronze colour, though both species have green eyes.

It is widespread in most of C. and N. Europe, becoming rarer in the West. It is found in most of Sweden.

This was taken at a distance of about 2.5 meters (8 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hej Ivan,

Hi Ivan

Apparently i've missed many f your shots lately, having taken a break from TN, but please be sure that even if i didn't comment on them, i took pleasure in watching and reading them.
However, now when i have a bit more time, i had to get back at this post...i think you know it's one closer to my heart :)
You've captured this Brilliant Emerald in an excellent way here - with impeccable details and with a lovely blurry BG.
The pose is also classic and the metallic reflections on its body attract even more attention.
I hope that i get o take at least one more tip to the mountains here this year and maybe i'll find this species here, as well :)

Anyway, Bravo and TFS
