White-letter Hairstreak Satyrium w-album

Swedish name: Almsnabbvinge, meaning ‘Elm Hairstreak’.

The English name refers to the w-shaped white line on the hind-wing, which is not easily seen on this image but I took another shot that I think is less attractive but shows it more clearly in the WORKSHOP.

Like the Green Hairstreak this species is only seen resting with the wings closed.
As the Swedish name suggests it is entirely dependent on Elm, in Sweden Ulmus glabra.

Not only is Elm the larval host plant but it spends most of its life near elm. Since the advent of Dutch elm disease it has become less common and more confined to where elms survive.
Fortunately it is often the case that though the main tree dies the roots send up shoots that are not attacked by the disease-spreading bark beetle until the trees are large enough.

With this in mind I went to a place where such shoots, about 4 meters high were growing alongside a dead tree. Sure enough I saw 5 individuals chasing each other around the branches to settle for a short time before disappearing in a typical rapid whirling hairstreak flight.

This species is often to be found taking nectar from flowers such as thistles but it also flies around the crowns of deciduous trees that have leaves covered by sticky honeydew, secreted by aphids. At this locality there were no nearby flowers.

It flies during the whole of July and into August and is to be found locally where there are elms nearby in most of Europe and S. Sweden.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 2 meters (over 6 ft). In this situation a 420mm focal length was absolutely necessary.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

This species has been posted twice before on TN.

Good morning Ivan,
a nice setting and well composed picture to show this small 'jewel'.
I always saw this species as single specimens and very localized.
Some days ago 'acassidy' also posted a picture of w-album.
Best wishes, Peter

Hallo Ivan
I love the shine you caught on this butterfly’s hairy part of the body, as it displays a variation of metallic colours which is rather beautiful. The details of the eye, striped paws and the antennas with its orange tips are clear and well seen. The clarity is good. The contrast between the green leave and the neutral range of colours of the butterfly is a great match. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Ivan,
This is a very good shot in difficult light, with part shadow on the wings. Very sharp and 'alive' with the butterfly almost full face. I like it a lot. Regards

Hello Ivan,
a splendid picture of the White-letter Hairstreak, i like the very nice composition with a lovely pose of the butterfly on the leaf in a fantastic natural environment, superb lighting.
Best regards

Hi Ivan. You must have asteady hand to take this fine picture with the 300mm + 1.4 converter. It has given you a first class close up with good detail and sharp focusing. I like the POV looking straight at the face so we can see the large eyes. All taken with natural colours. well done TFS.

Ciao Ivan. An hard POV for a fantastic claryty and depthting compo. Very good details here.

Hi Ivan,

Both views of this rarely seen on TN butterfly are wonderful, but I agree that this is the more appealing. It's the position of the head that does it for me. This White-letter Hairstreak is very beautiful and of course you show it in fine details and lovely colors. I love the white rings around the eyes.

Hello Ivan
superbly composed shot of this Satyrium W-album with nice pose on a leaf
wondeful colors and lighting, fine contrast between butterfly and plain BG

Hola Sr. Ivan.
Todas las fotos logradas con ese extraordinario lente son una belleza para la vista. Esta en particular le da alta nitidez y un fondo difuso que le hace lucir aun mas bella.
Exelente nota escrita Sr. Ivan. Siempre se aprende algo nuevo al leer.

A beautiful little butterfly Ivan!
Love the sharp detail and excellent DOF you managed to capture! Excellent exposure with great natural colors. Very informative notes!! TFS.

Hej Ivan,

Excellent details, the focus is well placed!
The blurry greenery works well as background, and the shape of the leaf adds a fine dimension in composition...
The DoF isolates and enhances the insect nicely, eyes and antennas stand out so well!

Hello Ivan !
I have missed this picture when you posted it, a pity, but I see it now - and I love it. It'zs really a wonderful species of butterfly, and you have captured it so nicely, with excellent details and sharpness, from a great POV, with natural colors, and the composition as well as the blurred BG are excellent too. I also like the WS shot just as much as this one, even if you say it is less attractive. Very well done !
