New Forest Burnet (Zygaena viciae)

Swedish name: Mindre B-stardsvärmare, meaning lesser Burnet moth

Despite the name, this species of Burnet moth is extinct in the New Forest and now only occurs in the UK as a subspecies in Argyllshire.

In Sweden it occurs sparsely in the S.E. This was taken at a damp meadow nature reserve.

It is smaller than most Burnet moths and can also be told from other five-spotted burnets by the more rounded wings and the sparser density of black scales on the wings. The adults are avid flower visitors and like all burnet moths they fly slowly, being protected from predators by their striking warning colours.

The main larval host plant in Sweden is Bird's Foot Trefoil) (Lotus corniculatus), from which the larva also concentrates poisonous substances that remain when it becomes adult.

Like other burnet moths in Sweden it is red-listed. Though it is widespread in Europe it is not common. One sign of this is that I seem to be the only person to have posted this species on TN!

The two small 2-mm long OOF beetles on this thistle flower belong to the Nitidulidae family of beetles and are very common on flowers.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) and after moderate cropping it was selectively sharpened.

very beautiful Zygaena optimally resumed in all its splendor. Focusing is great and thanks to it we can appreciate all its beauty, the vivid red and black colors and the perfect details. Excellent the light management that, with nice glares, puts in prominence the small bug on the delicate flower and the soft BG. Thanks

Wow, this is a real beauty, Ivan!
A very neat and healthy specimen that stands out crystal clear from the flowery perch that show-cases another subject, albeit somewhat out of focus.
The colour tones on the wings are truly life-like and very attractive.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Ivan. Your 300 mm & converter works as well as any macro lens i have seen. As i only live a few miles from the New Forest I would be pleased to see this but as you say i would have to go to Argyllshire. This is a first class top view of this Burnet, showing the red markings so well. With the shine to the blue/grey wings. Sharp focusing and fine detail. Both the plant and the moth stand out from the plain coloured BG. wel ldone TFS.

This is fantastic. Vivid colours, perfect DOF and excellent composition. A very complementary background, also! I have never seen this species, so I envy you the encounter also ;)
Best wishes, Nigel.

Slav Îvan,
A wonderful macro shot of this very beautiful moth from great POV with excellent sharpness and colors.TFS.

Hi Ivan,

Unbeatable forefront of the insect, with stunning detail, excellent color tones and brightness frankly enviable. This contrasted with the excellent background blur, and the flower with intermediate approach, make this a beautiful picture. Congratulations!

Ciao Ivan. Indeed an impressive details. Is perfect! Very good choisen POV and spectacular compo.

Hello Ivan!
Of course the Zygaena moth pays attention a lot but I must say that your note "showed" me that there is something more on the photo. Second view allowed to find small Nitidulid beetle! :>
Picture is like from nature album - colourful, sharp and with very good DOF. Nothing to add :)
All the best,

Hello Ivan,

this a specie that I have not been captured yet.
Good pov and dof.
Beautiful colours.
Very nice picture.

Hi Ivan,

An awesome capture of the red spotted burnet with such great clarity!
Sharpness and POV are amazingly well with nice use of the shallow DOF. The colors of the insect are perfectly shown and the textures very well defined through your shot.
Wonderful work!

thanks and regards,

Hello Ivan,

This is a spectacular capture.
The focus is sharp and clearly captures the details of colour, pattern and texture of the moth's wings.
You have made a fine diagonal composition of the moth as it feeds from the thistle flower. (I see it has a little friend!)
Good dof to create an oof b/g.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

ciao Ivan!

Hi Ivan,

We are seeing so many rare moths thanks to you and Ulla! This Burnet Moth is so pretty with the black head and the beautiful silver wings with the red spots. Excellent colors, clarity and composition.

hello Ivan

excellent macro photo like nature morte photo style,
with fine POV, fine focus great sharpness and details,

Hello Ivan,
you seem to be never short of a new species to me. I've not seen this Zygaena viciae before. What intrigues me with this shot is how you mastered the black parts, by letting the individual scales reflect the light. But no glare here, ingenious!
Best regards

Hi Ivan,
Una preciosa Zygaena, en éste caso parece que está posada sobre un Cirsium, alpestre quizás?
A perfect shoth.
Salut!!! Ferran

Hello Ivan

Hi Ivan,
Colors, contrast, lighting, composition, POV and setting look lovely.
Best wishes,

Hello Ivan !
Congratulations for being the first to post this species, but it is sad to hear that the species is threatened (like so many others). But the picture here is amazing by its quality and beauty. Every part of the moth, even the antennas, are pin sharp, allowing us to see many interesting details. I also like the vivid colors, the perfect POV, the blurred BG, the composition. Very well done !

I missed this one. What a great shot of a beautiful moth. Stunning sharpness and amazing details. One of your best IMO. Superb.
