This is a fairly rare European species not often seen on TN.

False Heath Fritillary, female (Melitaea diamina )

Swedish name: Sotnätfjäril, meaning ‘soot fritillary’

The False Heath Fritillary (Melitaea diamina) is so called because it superficially resembles the Heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia).

But this English name is not very appropriate, partly because diamina habitat is damp open meadows and partly because it is easy to see its distinctly darker colour, even in flight.
But this misnomer is understandable since the Heath fritillary is very rare in Britain where the False Heath fritillary has never occurred.

It is, however, rare in Sweden occurring in a few localities in the South and Central parts and it is fairly widespread but only locally common in the right moist habitat in most of Europe.

The Swedish name describes it as the Sooty Fritillary. The female is less sooty and has more spots on the hindwings.

This freshly-emerged female has very striking markings, especially on the hind wings. Compare her with the male in the WORKSHOP.

The host food plants are two species of Valeriana that occur in marshy habitats. It is threatened by land drainage and modern methods of agriculture.

This shot was taken at a distance of about two meters with my camera hand. After moderate cropping and size reduction this was slightly sharpened and the contrast reduced by 10% as the light spots were too bright.

Hallo Ivan
You surely know how to warm a person’s heart on a cold winter’s day – It is a beautiful butterfly and the warm colours and patterns are just gorgeous. The blotches of yellow-orange on the wings remind me of a cosy fire place. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna

Hi Ivan!

Very interesting capture of small Sotnätfjäril. I've never seen this specie and even any member of subfamily of Melitaeinae. Both wings are sharp, DOF is great. Insect in this pose presents all its beauty. BG is ok, same as light. Good workshop also - both pictures are interesting and taken very well.

Hello Ivan,
very beautiful and clear capture of this butterfly. The full spread wings allow the beauty to be appreciated well. The colours are so dense and rich, what an attractive composition.Best regards Siggi

Good morning Ivan,

She is a real dark lady this one, and I love the velvety texture of the body and wings. Beautifully presented photo, with perfect sharpness on the butterfly and nettle? leaf, from where she has just metamorphosed maybe. The BG makes a really effective backdrop for this photo.

Bonjour Ivan,

Ciao Ivan. Good detaisl on wings weft and best light's managment to exalt natural colours.

Roberto.

HI Ivan,
I'm realy a little jealous when I see all the wonderful butterflies you already captured this year. Again we don't have many butterflies here this year, so sad. This one is beautiful, the wings are wide open and the light is very nice.
Thanks, have a nice day

Hola Ivan

Hi Ivan.
I also have not met this species in our countryside. You have presented it hear with WS perfectly. Both shots are composed greatly and their diagonal structure are very impressive. Details of the butterflies are perfectly as well as reproduction of their colourations and shapes. TFS and all the best. Have a nice weekend.
Alexei.

Thats a realy good picture with great natural colours and fantastic sharpness!
I like it a much! Thanks!

Bonjour Ivan,
Elle est très belle cette Melitaea, mais en France, il faut prendre de l'altitude pour la rencontrer. Elle ne doit pas aimer la chaleur...
Merci pour cette pose très réussie
Amicalement
