[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While I was photographing some burnet moths I saw several of these large wasps flying over a bare sandy area.

Sand Wasp, Bembix rostrata

Swedish name: Läppstekel, meaning 'lip wasp'. This refers to the thickened lower part of the labrum on the face that looks like a thick lip. Under this lip-like protrusion is a pair of jaws.

The WORKSHOP shows a dorsal POV. this species is about 2cm long. Though this has better overall sharpness, I think the main image is more interesting.

This is a female that landed on the loose sand where she probably has dug or shall dig a hole about 10 cm deep with a chamber at the end. Females have spiky legs that they use for digging.
She lays an egg in the chamber and the larvae is fed by caught flies that will be larger as it grows until flies such as horseflies are caught and fed to it.

There were a dozen others flying with her and they nest in colonies in areas sheltered from the wind. They fly fast and low to land suddenly. So I had the camera set up on my cheap tripod waiting for one to come in range.

There are over 350 species of Sand Wasp around the world, all in this family. It is red-listed in Sweden and it is not common in Europe. The species has become rare due to the loss of open warm sandy areas.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). I needed a high shutterspeed as she was constanly moving with rapid jerky movements.

After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW to JPEG.

You really have some stunning images in your gallery, this Sand wasp being one of them. Wow, if this is not perfect photography then I do not know what is. The bright colours is really gorgeous, the focus on the dot, the composition to my liking and everything else just so pretty. This is indeed a spectacular macro. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Sharp details on that little monster. He looks mean.
The colors are so vivid for a wasp. An uncommon species.

After 40 years this was my last working day. (and made my tv debut). Now I got really time to photograph.

Hello Ivan. Interesting to see wasps crawling on sandy beach as we don't get to see that often here in Malaysia. What is interesting is the name too. You capture is brilliant and 300mm with the converted kept you at a very good distance. The focus is tack sharp stopping down to f8 leaving most of the important element in very nice vivid details. Brilliantly composed and thanks for sharing.

Jusni

Bonjour Ivan,
A very interesting contribution to TN. These Bembix Wasps are impressive, I have seen some in our mountain region too. Both images are well taken, nice to have a dorsal view too. The color-combination grey/yellow is very pleasant. Amazing to read that they feed even on Horse-flies!
Un grand merci
Bon dimanche ŕ vous deux
