[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Bumblebees don't have many predators because they are warning-coloured and rather sturdy. This means that it can be an advantage to look like a bumble bee without actually being one.

This happens often in the insect world. Some edible butterflies can look just like inedible, poisonous ones and escape predation. This is known as Batesian Mimicry.

So this is a Bumblebee-like hoverfly, Volucella bombylans, exhibiting a form of batesian mimicry. But you can see the differences: the eyes are large and set close together like those of a fly. It has also longer, fly-like legs. Though not seen here, it also has only one pair of wings, like a typical fly.

This shot was taken by a marsh and the thistle flowers are those of the Marsh Thistle.

Hi Ivan.
I like your perfectly done picture of this amazing scene. Nice flowers with excellent detailed and hard working insect on one of them look wonderfully. Crisp sharpness and perfect details combine with extremely well blurred and coloured BG nicely too. Great diagonal composition of this wonderful picture. My compliments and best regards.

Hi Ivan,

Interesting note on a beautifully taken macro shot. Nice colors, OOF BG, and compo.

Hi Ivan,
Very good macro!
I like the close approach and POV used here.
It's very good the "hanging moment" of the insect and the flower, who drives the eye through the image to the righ down.
Well done and thanks for share it.
Best regards,

Hi Ivan,
A great macro shot. Colors and detail are superb. I though it was a Bumble Bee at first glance till I read your excellent notes. I guess I had better pay more attention. Excellent camera work!
