[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a male Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis). Males can be distinguished from females by having varying amounts of green and by the size of the head, which is broader. Females are brownish with dark brown markings (see WORKSHOP). The legs of a sand lizard are relatively short and both specimens shown in this posting are adult, the male being slightly larger at a length of about 18 cm.

This species is relatively rare in Sweden, being found drier areas around the coast in the south of the country where there is a good diversity of flowers and invertebrates. It is found in small colonies where there is a warm microclimate and small open areas where it can warm up and wait for prey. Both species of lizard and the three species of snake are protected in Sweden.

It is widespread in most of N. and C. Europe but rare in the UK and absent from Spain.

I found several of them on small sandy areas created by recent heavy rains that had washed sand from a grit road in our local army shooting range, a haven for wildlife.

Both shots were taken at a distance of 2.5-3 meters with the camera hand-held. After about 20% cropping and size reduction the images were sharpened. Once again I can stress the advantage of a 420mm lens combination that allows photography with less risk of scaring the subject away.

Hi Ivan. I like the low POV you have achieved here, maybe lying well down on the ground? Vey good close up result. Good notes which explain it so well. TFS. Murray.

Hi Ivan

As its name suggest being a sand lizard it is great that you actually captured this one on the sandy environment.

Compositionally it worked great with this little guy lying on the diagonal line through the frame. I get the impression that you were pretty close to the ground as well when you pressed the shutter release. The colour spectrum is great and the exposure levels were well managed.

Good work and TFS.
