The freshest male does not always get to mate a female. Here a very worn and tattered male Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) succeeded in mating with a fresh female, much to the frustration of another much fresher male that arrived too late.

You can see how the fresh male is trying to direct the tip of his abdomen towards the female, but without success as the old male is already attached.
After a few seconds trying he flew away.

The genes of old male may be good to have as he survived several days of heavy rain.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 2 meters and is presented not for any special technical merits but to show a little of the struggle for survival.

hello Ivan,

nice shot, this post of yours has concluded my theme Passion Unlimited as its the 100th shot of the mentioned theme,

This is a nice and interesting capture of the mating butterflies with a spectator, i liked the pov and the composition of the post, the dull green bg gives good contrast to the colourful insects,
well done,
tfs & regards
pankaj

Hi Ivan,
you have captured a great action of these three buttrflies.
The old one looks to be in very bad condition but as youm say
age before beauty,
Good sharpness, fine details and nice colours.
Well done.

en mycket varm dag igen, igår var det så varmt så att fjärilar
höll sig stilla ;-)

Hi Ivan,

I think this shot has technical merits! An amazing shot with the perfect title and excellent notes. A wonderful slice of butterfly life! You captured all three with great detail. The leaves make a beautiful setting.

Hello Ivan,
Lovely details in this interesting composition!
For some reason three looks better than two or four, which yuou make well use of in this fine composition...
Attractive natural colours and sharp fine details in this amazing situation!

Hi Ivan,
An excellent capture showing the struggle in nature to survive. Very nicely composed and excellent details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Dear Ivan,
I would like to say: bravo! bravo! bravo!
Not only a very good quality picture but also showing a "true life" of insects. Most photos on TN showing "perfect" butterflies, with all legs, parts of wings, ect. And thanks to these photos we can easy forget that in the insect world not everything can be seen in "pink colours" :) And here is the great exaple that even the beautiful butterflies are older and older...
As I noted above, I like your technique with all these: POV, DOF, sharpness, colours, ect., but this time the biggest point for the documentary aspect of image :)
My best regards and all the best!
Radomir

Hi Ivan,
Excellent capture of the competition for the female. Great POV and colors. Glad to see the older experience male getting the prize. Well captured.

Jim

That's what I always say ;)
Excellent capture Ivan, great work.
The capture does show the struggle for survival very well..Good interest with the three, and the title says it all.
TFS.

Ivan, Wonderful shot and such a lovely focus. The clarity is very good and also lighting. Ganesh

Absolutely beautiful!!! I love the activity here...so much happening, so many players. :)
It reminds us that beauty is not limited to perfection.

What an interesting triology, Ivan :-)!
The old blighter despite his sorry condition is able to mate whereas the young one despite his great looks seems to be in a state of complete frustration over his failure :-).
A wonderful composition with sharp focus on the subjects.
Thanks for sharing and best regards.

Hello Ivan !
This one the most beautiful didn't win ! Maybe it's better like that, the old one is a survivor, he will transmit his strong genes to the next generation ! :-) The picture is beautiful too, with excellent details, nice natural colors, beautiful composition and POV. I also appreciate to see the green side of the wings, I always get them with open wings on my own photos. Very well done !
Valerie.

Well, the worn male is definately demostrating the quality of his gens, despite of his "hard life" and war injuries, still strong and active :)
The shot is very nice and controlled, the moment captured and composition very interesting.
Thanks and best regards, Felipe.

Hi,
Great shot of this A. paphia.
Good light and contrasts.
TFS,
Iulian

Hello Ivan,

Very unusual picture. Great colours and sharpness.
BTW: thanks for the correction my Satyrium spini ;-D
