[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Ilex Hairstreak (Satyrium ilicis)is rare and red-listed in Sweden, where it is found in a few localities along the coast in the SE. This is the most northerly occurrence in Europe, where it otherwise occurs on most parts of the continent.

This hairstreak does not inhabit large oak trees. Instead, unlike the Purple Hairstreak, it is found on shrubby oaks, preferably those that have been kept low by cutting or grazing animals.

This individual was a member of a colony based on about twenty oak bushes near the edge of some sand cliffs by the Baltic Sea. These hairstreaks could shelter from the wind among the tight foliage of these oaks (Quercus robur). In the rest of Europe the host foodplants are various species of low-growing oak, including the Ilex Oak.

Of the three similar species hairstreak the Ilex is most modestly marked and like the similar White-letter hairsteak it never opens its wings at rest. The third species however, the Black Hairstreak, occasionally opens its wings to sun itself.

All three species are fond of flowers, like clovers and thrift and this species prefers white flowers but some individuals were to be found seeking nectar amongst the plentiful flowers of Wild Thyme growing nearby.

This individual was photographed on a sunny day at a distance of about 2 meters with the camera hand-held. After cropping by about 30% and size reduction the image was selectively sharpnened.

thiis might be the butterfly which I most wanted would like to take a picture of. I love the group of hairstreak a lot and over the years I have seen and photographed quite a few. But this species is missing on the list. But why bother, if you have taken such a nice image. I cab hardly think of a better presentation of a butterfly. Compliments!

Good morning Ivan,
clearly a master-work with respect to sharpness and composition. The leaf surface structure and colour in the foreground in combination with the well-focused butterfly make it a very attractive picture. Details are perfectly presented.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,
an exceptional shot of this Hairstreak.
Very sharp with a perfect POV clearly showing all the markings.
Both antenna are in focus and the DOF isolates the subject very well.
Well done,

Hola Ivan,

textura y color magníficos,

bonjour ivan
que voulez vous que je vous dises!!!!
felicitations et merci.

Hello Ivan,
This is a perfect capture of this so beautiful specie. Composition, details, exposure, DOF, everything is superb! I like those little orange spots on its wings. What a lovely post! Thanks,

Hello Ivan
Very well done - diagonal composition with leaf works very well. Complementary colors and BG nicely soft. The note is also very informative.

Great shot Ivan.
Excellent sharpness and pattern details.
Great DOF
Good diagonal composition.

Hello Ivan,

Here's a very good presentation of a little butterfly! It might not be the most beautiful species but you presented it in a very good composition. The empty space in the upper right corner was a must to balance the picture. The profile silhouette of the Ilex Hairstreak is easily readable against the green foliage in the background. It shows us the excellent details in the underside of the wings. A shame this species never opens its wings at rest so we can see its whole beauty.
From all the natural looking colors I like the blueish hue in the hair that covers the body and the orange spots. It's great to see the same orange hues both on the wings and the antennae. It brings harmony to your picture.
The exposure is absolutely perfect! The details were preserved in both highlights and shadows and the accurate focus rendered very sharp details in the butterfly! Even the small scales are visible! The DOF was perfectly controlled! It's amazing that both antennae are in sharp focus. This is an area where I still encounter difficulties.
I must point out that the very good PP you applied to the background adds perspective to your picture and also helps emphasizing the subject. Outstanding job! Thank you for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,

Hi Ivan,
Splendid portrait shot of this elegant looking Hairstreak. Great to see a red-listed species posted here, should be a concern to all and one question should ring immediately, "can I do something to help it?". Lovely colours and sharp details on its wings and it stands out well against the green habitat. The lighting and pose displayed are fabulous. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Dear Ivan,
Sorry for the note from the night, it was a little to late to write something with sence :)
I like this picture. This is a very good profile photo of species not known for me (or maybe known but Lycaenidae is a group to difficult for me - yes you are right, they are relatively big insects but believe me, I can not remember characters of these beautiful butterflies :
