This is a species of Cetoniid Beetle that are also loosely called Flower Beetles. Cetoniids are related to Scarabs and Dung beetles and include such famous giants as the Goliath Beetle

Potosia (Cetonia) cuprea is perhaps the most common flower beetle in Europe and is widespread in Sweden. At about 2 cm long it is fairly large and powerfully built and its mouthparts are rather reduced and only suitable for feeding on pollen and nectar.

Its larvae live in ant’s nests, especially those of Formica rufa, the Red Ant. They feed on the organic material that the nest is made of.

It is often the case that we see new things from our own photographs. Here I never noticed the peculiar projection on the side of the abdomen before. It looks like the leg has been broken off, but all the legs are intact.

This projection is a part of the abdomen but its function is still a mystery to me. It may be an extra aid in crawling through the flowers it visits, or it may be an extra grip during copulation, in which case only the females are likely to have it. Searching the internet was fruitless but perhaps someone can enlighten me.

As usual this shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. PP work included selective sharpening.

Good morning Ivan,
great picture of the beetle. The structures, surfaces and colours are shown very clear which is not so easy achieved with this kind of beetles (buried, dark and iridescent structures). Focus and sharpness are perfect. This is also true for composition and background.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,
Outstanding macro shot of this flower beetle with immaculate sharpness and lovely colour tones. The focus is absolutely spot-on and a great DOF lets it stand out from the neutral BG. The thistle looks beautiful and adds such nice colour to the frame. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Ivan,
That is an impressive fellow!
Great details have been captured in the beetle, wonderful colours also, and avoiding disturbing reflctions in the insect...
A fine composition with a good main diagonal!

Ivan I like the view and composition. What is amazing is the bug covering the entire flower and taking it as a bed. Ganesh

Hi Ivan.
What a brilliant reproduction of this cute bug and wonderful flower. I am impressed with the exactness of reproduction of all details and texture of the bug, your low POV and impressive inclined composition. BG is wonderful at its smoothness and colourfulness. Lighting is perfect and is under your control. Superb, skillfully done close-up. Bravo.

Very sharp & detailed Ivan.
Excellent use of ambient light with perfectly natural colors. The colors of the pink thistle head really stand out with the green beetle and green BG, nice combination..
The POV and composition couldn't be better :)
Very well done.

Hello Ivan,
Very interesting post on a very common beetle, but like you I never noticed the appendix on the abdomen. The colours of your picture are most beautiful and harmonious, the composition excellent too. Thanks a lot also for the note.

Hallo Ivan
Being a new member to Trek Nature I am still browsing if time permits. I think at this stage my eyes are working overtime to search for anything that will grab my attention, and I am sure by the end of the week I’ll be squint-eyed. It sure is a very difficult task, and it is easier said than done to pick and choose for a particular photo to critique. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such fabulous portfolios. Your own portfolio is filled with a selection of splendid photos and it was not easy for me to choose one to critique. I decided to give this “Flower Beetle” a go. This is an excellent capture filled with a wide variety of colours which really complement one another. The beetles metallic colours stands out well and the detail of the insect is first-class. I enjoyed browsing through your portfolio and this “Flower Beetle” are well presented. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

Hello Ivan,
must really thanks you for the concern and care in my post. identifying insects, butterfly and moth is really a difficult task for. You help me a lot.
This beetle is so exciting. Very clear and sharp image.
Look very textures creature. Really beautiful .

Dear Ivan,
I found your photo, when I googled Cetoniid beetle.

I see the difference between the Swedish and the South African is mainly, your's has horizontal, thin and our's length-wise, broad stripes. Our's had also a V-shaped marking on the top of the head. Last not least, the back legs of the South African beetle also had this wine-red stripe on the front of his back-legs, similar to reflectors on the pdals of a bicycle.

I always admired your wide knowledge of Insects. Now, I am even more now impressed - you identified your beetle!!

I wish, we had meadows with flowers. Your insects definitely look better sitting on flowers than ours on bricks (our drive, where I found it).

Your image is as sharp as an ink drawing, and the pastel colours of the background enhance the colours of the flower.

I like very much the tight control of depth of field, concentrating the view on the beetle and the flower-head.

Have a good week,
Best Wishes
