Spotted Longhorn Beetle Rutpela maculata

Swedish name: Fläckig blombock, meaning ‘spotted flower longhorn’

We went to a pond surrounded by deciduous trees and sunny glades with wild flowers, unspoilt not because it was a nature reserve but because it is part of a the ministry of defence property, most of which is used as for training army manoeuvres, but the dam area is left without interference.
Among the dragon and damselflies and other insects I saw this Longhorn landing on a nettle, though this species usually prefers white flowers. It didn’t stay long but I managed a few shots before it flew away.

This is a fairly common and widespread species, being found in S. Scandinavia, especially near the coasts and it is found in most of Europe, though it is rare in the west and found in S. England (thanks Vinny!).
The spots on the upper part of the abdomen vary in size and are sometimes absent.

The larvae feed on the rotting branches of many species of deciduous trees, where they take up to two years to develop. The adults visit mostly white flowers like Ox-eye daisies and Cow parsley.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

This species has been posted several times before on TN.

Hi Ivan
A good capture of this beetle which is present in good numbers here in the south of England this year. We've even had them in our garden in Central Bournemouth. Good details - especially as your lens configuration for the shot is not a dedicated macro one! ;p
Well exposed and good DOF allowing the subject to stand out from the nettles and bedstraw.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Más que sobrada eficacia Ivan. con buenos colores y profundidad. La pose bonita y además escondiendo la cabeza, la parte de más dificultad jeje. Alguna hojita se interpone pero supiste resolver bien técnicamente como siempre.
Saludos: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Ivan,
The Spotted Longhorn is also guest on my meadow, but somehow I never managed to make a good picture of it. I like your composition a lot with the focus on the beetle and a very fine,a little bit blurred, surrounding.
Un grand merci et meilleures pensées
