The Moor-king (Pedicularis sceptrum-carolinum) is a member of the large plant family that includes Veronicas, Eye-brights, Foxgloves and Louseworts, Scrophulariaceae.

The genus Pedicularis is mainly northern and I am going to post images of two species of Lousewort belonging to this genus taken during my tour of S. Lapland.

The Moor-king is called Kung Karls Spira in Swedish, which is a translation of the scientific name, meaning King Charles’ Scepter. When fully grown it can reach a stately height of 80cm (nearly 3ft). It is found in rich damp and marshy soils and more common in the North of Sweden. South of Dalarna it is pretty rare and unknown in the South of the country. So I was delighted to see this beauty the attraction of which I have tried to capture.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 3 meters (10ft) in the early evening when the sun shines bright and low at this latitude of 65 N.

After very little cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

It' so wonderful to see a beautiful flower like this from Lappland. (I always thought there was one "p" in the name. Where else would I ever see this beauty? I can't imagine seeing it at 3' high. Just wonderful with gorgeous colors, super fine details, and a perfect background.

...and good Moorking to you too!:-) I see you are doing your good spouses style today. It does have a certain feminine quality to it..Not sure why..perhaps because of the complexity of design! Very nice image Ivan.

hello Ivan,
A wonderful King's Scepter, this flower. I didn't know it, but it reminds me of some marsh-flowers in the alpine regions. Very well photographed with great sharpness and a pleasant green background. Thank you to present flora from the very North of your country

The light has a different character to it at that latitude, Ivan.
I was in England in June 1995 and I was surprised when the sun shone there even at 9 p.m.
Here in India, the daylight, or rather twilight, stretches up to 7 p.m. at the height of summer.

The Moor King in this light at shutter speed 1/1000 is exposed perfectly. The variations in colours and shades are without blemish.
It is interesting to read about the name of this plant in your note.
TFS and regards.

Hi Ivan

Even though i'm not a huge fan of flower photos (don't know why really) this is indeed a special one.

I've never seen this species before and it sure looks impressive.
Its natural contrast and texture are wonderful, while the colors are gorgeous!
The way you've managed to isolate it from anything else is also great and adds a lot to the value of the shot. Spot-on DOF and lovely vertical compo.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Bonjour Ivan,
Superbe macro finement détaillée et délicatement colorée.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
