[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Recently I posted my first image of a Bluethroat ( Luscinia svecica). After taking some shots at a fairly close range my son and I sat down to watch the pair sufficiently far away so as not to disturb them.

They were both so busy hunting insects that our presence at a distance of about 12 meters (40ft) from where we assumed the nest to be did not appear to disrupt them. The male was more open in his activities while the female (see WORKSHOP) was more secretive. However I managed to get a poor shot of her in the shade. This one has hardly any blue at all.

The male caught a winged female of our largest species of ant a species of Carpenter Ant (Camponotus herculaneus). The winged females are up to 18mm long. This species is widespread in the whole country and is more common at higher altitudes like here at 750 meters (2460ft). I tried to photograph one without success.

Bluethroats are summer visitors to the Swedish Mountains and to the tundra regions. They even nest in low bushes above the tree-line. The Swedish ssp has a red spot in the blue, the C and S. European a white spot, while the Turkish and Caucasian ssp has an entirely blue throat.

This was taken at a distance of about 12 meters and though it is heavily cropped, noisy in places, and has a busy BG, I thought it was worth posting to show not only how striking the breast is when the male stretches his neck, but the vegetation that includes Blueberry in flower.

The camera was resting on my knee while sitting and it was taken in the late afternoon. After heavy cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,
what a fine specimen you have caught here. A beautiful setting amongst all that green foliage, which really makes the Blue throat stand out gloriously.
Your shot here is the result of great observation and of experience of how to position yourself correctly to put this bird at ease enough to hunt in near proximity to you. Great detail and a sharp focus too - very well done!

This is an absolutely amazing photo. It must be great to get this close to this beauty. I have seen them a couple of times here in Småland but always very swiftly. Did you use a hide or anything?

I think the insect and the look of the bird makes this photo very special.
Best regards/Bengt

Hello Ivan, perfect and splendid capture of this beautiful bird in feeding. TFS. Regards,

Hi Ivan,

I love this!!! The Bluethroat is such a beautiful bird to begin with and this shot of him is spectacular. Colors and details are magnificent - even a wonderful sparkle in his eye. But quite an accomplishment to capture him with the winged insect in his mouth! Gorgeous setting and stunning composition.

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan,
Just marking this one, I will be back.

Hi Ivan,
You look good in your new pic taken by your son :).
A slight noise is inconsequential in an action picture like this one. The bird has been shot beautifully and in a graceful pose, holding the ant in its beak.
The blue colour on the throat with the patch of brown on it is truly beautiful.
Thanks for sharing this new image and best regards.

This is a lovely shot, Ivan!Sorry am very busy with work these days!

Hi Ivan

What a wonderful scene captured here...as usual i guess the male is more colourful than the female....

As i spend more time on each critique i am not able to write for each post made by so many of you here. Thus, i also missed one of your earlier posts of the same bird. But i think this one is no less than the earlier one.Infact this one is in action!

I like the ground level PoV that you have used and God!you were lucky in getting the liberty to click at free will.I guess food comes first!

I love the bib like brown around the throat and i also feel this is one of the most distinct features of the bird. The pacth of blue on the neck is a superb contrast against the general colour of the bird. The capture being a setting right out of an everyday scene makes it more appreciable.

Good colours, contrasts and lighting. The crop does not affect the beauty of the picture in any way. The foliage and green around provides a very refreshing ambience to the whole composition.

I am also glad that you posted the less colourful female as supporting material.

Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
