Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria)

This is a female looking similar to the male that I posted about a month ago. Apart from laying the eggs she has another role in the process of producing the next generation. She broods the eggs while the male keeps watch in a prominent position nearby. You can see him here

Being well camouflaged with her surroundings, she sits tight on her four eggs but if an intruder comes too close she runs off and tries to distract the intruder away from the nest. While doing that she tries to pretend to be injured by trailing a wing and by making the tail slope down.
I took a shot of another female doing this on the roadside when we came out of the car that happened to be parked near a nest. (see WORKSHOP)

When the young have hatched they leave the nest and soon begin to look for insects while both parents keep watch.

In September they fly south to spend the winter along the coasts of Western Europe. They moult into winter plumage which is a speckled golden yellowish colour, which explains the English name. In Swedish it is called ‘Ljungpipare’, meaning ‘Heather Piper’.

The vegetation consists of heather, blueberries and Dwarf Birch that is seen in the image. Dwarf Birch (Betula nana) is a bush found in most of Sweden but is especially common in the alpine and sub-alpine zones. It never grows taller than 1.5 meters (5 ft).

This was taken with the camera hand held at a distance of about 6 meters (20 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

I apologise to Jusni and Siggi who were kind enough to give me critique on a version of this image that I removed soon after posting as I was not pleased with the the PP work.

Hello Ivan
A beutiful bird and perfect shot in all aspects. TFS and regards,

Hej Ivan,

Lovely colours and detail on this bird's plumage. You have also shown how well they can camoflage themselves but maintained your DoF so that it does stand out from the background.

He is a beautiful Golden Plover, Ivan. And what big eyes she has too.
I can see how her colours give her really good camouflage with her surroundings.
Well captured, good focus too,

Hi Ivan
She would be well camouflaged with all the speckels on her once she is flat on the ground. Great image of her, wonderful exposure, colour and detail with a great pose.
Lovely image showing the environment around her in soft focus, makes her stand out but lets us see her surroundings.

Hello Ivan,

A wonderful capture of this female Golden Plover, those markings are amazing, beautiful colours, and really well captured in her natural surroundings, really nice work, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Merhaba Ivan,
Daha önce hiç görme şansı bulamadığım bu kuşun harika bir karesini sunmuşsunuz. Elinize sağlık.

Hi Ivan,

one of the highlights of Northern Scandianvian fauna! Great bird! Your composition is very good, it shows all the typical elements of a "fjell" what with the dwarf bush, mossberries and lichens. To us Swiss this looks utterly exotic. Well done!
My best regards, Ivan,

Very cute mama Golden Plover, Ivan.
I like the colours and intricate patterns on her plumage.
A well captured shot with sharp focus and nice details.
Thanks and regards.

Arent birds amazing, they are so different and varied. It never ceases to amaze me. This is a fascinating shot of a bird i've never seen before. The wings with that mass of patterns is amazing. A lovely shot, nice and sharp and the colours are great. Overall a very interesting shot.

Hi Ivan!
This bird has very beutiful colouration! And as I know very good to be perfectly camouflaged among grasses and bushes. Very nice capture of species not too often presented in TN gallery (really I can not remind any other picture except your earlier one).
TFS and have a nice afternoon.

Hi Ivan,
You have managed to get quite close to this beauty. I have followed the game you described in North Yourkshire Moors but they usually keep the distance. Very good capture with good POV and composition, sharp details, beautiful colours and BG, nice catch light.

Hello Ivan,
Everything in this photo is superb. The low POV, colours, composition and sharpness are really perfect. Very beautiful environment.
Kind regards,

Speak to me of complexity! so the old saying goes...a beauty in design...It would look sleek if it were not meant for hiding itself..perhaps it is just coincidence...but the bird does perch lovely on the ground in surrounding and adapting nature...very well seen...actually I am glad you caught it yourself!

Hello Ivan,
The genus Pluvialis which I have not taken their photographes, very beautiful Charadriformes birds. I like their plumage pattern and colors. Your capture wonderful. Eyes contact, sharp details, POV and colors great. Good information. Thanks. best wishes my friend

Hi Ivan, another superb composed and perfectly focused Golden Plover. But this time a female of this beauty! Great notes on the biology too..

Hi Ivan,

Although the male and female are very similar there is something feminine about her face. Beautiful Golden Plover with lovely colors and good details. I love the black patch on her face with the eye sparkling through. The workshop is really interesting - I would think she was injured for sure.

Hello Ivan. Even better exposure and isolation of this unique bird. Still the sharp image and well focused on the head with the plumage looking very artistic. Have a good weekend Ivan and warm regards. Jusni

Hi Ivan,
Me gusta mucho esta foto, el entorno hace desdibujar un poco a la figura del ave por su plumaje camuflado, finamente manchado.Una muy linda foto con buen acercamiento
