Redshank (Tringa totanus).

On our trip to the Swedish mountains my son and I stopped by a road above the tree-line at about 1000 meters (3300 ft) ASL. Though it was 8 pm the sun shone brightly but low, as it does as it does so close to the Arctic Circle.

This male flew round us after we got out the car. He had his nest in a nearby marshy area so without approaching his nest we took some shots of him while he circled around us and making his warning calls.

The Redshank is a widespread and fairly common wader in the marshy areas of most of Europe, nesting in C. and N. and overwintering more to the south and west along the coast. As it is very vocal when alarmed it is sometimes referred to as ‘the sentinel of the marsh’ sounding the alarm for other species as well.

Those that nest in Sweden spend the winter along the coasts of Western Europe but a few remain on the coasts of the South of sweden, together with a few of a subspecies from Iceland.

The English and Swedish name 'Rödbena' refer to its bright red legs that are seen trailing in flight in this image.

This was taken at a distance of about 15 meters (50 ft) and after moderate cropping the image was sharpened a little.

Hi Ivan,

I was just ready to call it a day when I spotted this beautiful Redshank flying in the lovely blue sky. The raised wings above the horizontal body are magnificent. Outstanding colors and details of the entire bird. Wonderful face and plummage. I love the partially red beak and the red tail. I have never seen one of these birds.

Hello Ivan! Amazing flight. Wonderful composition. Very dynamic shot. Good luck!

Hi Ivan,

Really nice capture of this Redshank in full flight, excellent detail in the plumage, wonderful markings to, and it encourages me when I see somebody else using a converter, I've only just tried to use one again and was worried about loss of detail, but this is really good and stands out well against that perfect blue sky, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Well composed pic that has good POV, DOF, clear BG and displays the subject in action very well. Never easy to show great detail of a moving subject.

Hello Ivan. Very good shot in flight with the aid of the teleconverter. The image is still sharp with excellent detail of the bird in flight. The blue sky makes excellent background and I enjoyed reading your notes. Thanks. Jusni

Merhaba Dostum Ivan,

Hi Ivan,

Hello Ivan,
I like marshy birds and always when have opportunity observe them. I've met Redshank in spring and admired its flight. Your photo like to me. Blue sky and sharp bird.
Regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan
Great shot. Beautiful bird and a blue sky. nice simple composition, good sharpness Minimalistic but beautiful I like it very much

Hi my friend, A perfect capture of this beutiful Redshank in-flight with nice details and sharpness.
Have a nice day!

I can only imagine the intensity and angle of light in the Arctic Circle, Ivan, but can see very clearly that it suits this image of a flying Redshank to perfection.
I am impressed with you exif data; at aperture value f/5.6 and shutter speed of 1/4000, you have produced a brilliant shot. The bird is in perfect focus and all the details on it are in place. In fact at that shutter speed, you have literally 'frozen' the bird in mid flight.
The deep blue sky here earns its other synonym: HEAVENS.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Ivan

Another very beautiful captue from you and a gorgeous in-flight!
It's interesting to read that this was taken at 8 PM and that you were able to use a shutter speed of 1/4000 at this time of day :) I guess i have to try this for myself once :)
Anyway, your presentation of this Redshank is lovely, with exceptional details on the bird and nothing but a clear deep blue sky in the composition to distract the attention from it.
Very nice colors and DOF work, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ivan.
Nice catch and beautiful picture...
Thanks to share.
Kind regards.

Hello Ivan,
Great capture, superb sharpness, clarity, depth of field
and light, excellent composition and pov, beautiful
vivid colors and nice contrast against the claer blue

Here in the west a redshank is a tool one uses to pull off a clutch...so the name is not unusual for me but attaching it to an aviary is quite intriguing...A fine in flight capture. I am pretty impressed and hope to catch onto you technique soon!

Hello Ivan,
This is an incredibly sharp and clear inflight image of this Redshank. Great job and thanks for sharing Ivan.

I am speachless, Ivan!Too numb...to say anything!Beautiful is perhaps one of the many ways I can describe this shot as...

Well done, Ivan.
I like this specific catch light and also the blue sky in this Redshank in flight.

merhaba Ivan
this is great capture for T. totanus in flight. Great focus and details, colors, especially red parts very nice. white balance and eyes contact also great as like notes. As my observation, it is a bit dark colored. maybe subspecies different or color variation present among populations. Thanks for sharing, greeting my friend

Hello Ivan,

What a good shot of this Redshank in flight showing its streamlined body against the clear blue sky.
Lovely plummage details, and those red shanks nicely tucked up against its body!
Good composition leaving plenty of space for it to fly ino.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
