Northern Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus centaureae)

I am pleased to present this image not because of its quality, which is poor, but because it is a first for the species on TN! It is also a first of the species for me.

When my son and I went to the Swedish mountains I was hoping to get a good shot of this species, but as it had been warm and sunny for some time it had already past its flying period in that area and this worn female was the only one that I saw. I only managed two shots before she disappeared and this is marginally the better of two poor quality shots.

The Northern grizzled Skipper is circumpolar N. of latitude 60 in boggy areas away from the coasts but in N. America it also occurs in the Rockies and Appalachians. It flies from mid June to early July. The larval host plant is Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus).

Superficially it looks like other Pyrgus species but can be distinguished from them by the row of narrow white marks along the inside of the edge of the hindwings. The other distinguishing feature is of course the habitat.

The stem with the round leaves on the left is Dwarf Birch (Betula nana) and the OOF small red flowers on the right those of Northern Bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum).

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). This skipper was very active at the time and it took some time to chase her over the bog. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

This picture is not poor in quality at all, Ivan; you are a modest person.
We are, indeed, indebted to you for showing this very first butterfly of its own kind on TN.
With its wings fully open, the female of this species looks beautiful.
In addition, this image serves well in terms of the unique features of this Skipper.
Thanks for sharing the picture and best regards.

hi ivan,
nice to see this species, grizzled skipper, nice details with all marking to see and appreciate. well, i too recently got one here, will post it for comparison of this species from different continents. sometimes capturing the species is also important, qualiaty may take backsear.tfs.

Hi Ivan,
It is good tha you were able to get a shot of this elusive species to share with us here on TN.
Thats what makes TN one of the largest and most comprehensive nature reference guides to be found I believe.
We don't have so many butterflies here in NZ and in my four years of photography I've only ever got half a dozen shots or so of them.

Ciao Ivan,
complimenti per questa tua prima cattura e primo "post" su TN; eccellenti POV e composizione che mostrano perfettamente questo Pyrgus ripreso con ottimi dettagli e con una splendida ambientazione, molto belli e vividi i colori.

hello Ivan,
Very interesting posting indeed. Not easy to make the difference betweeen all these skippers. Thanks to explain us what makes the difference. I also have found some endemic species which I will show in the future. Our TN archive is still growing and contains so many little jewels.
Have a nice day

Hi Ivan
Very interesting contribution to TN gallery. As for the quality it is OK. The only thing is little overexposure on white spots. I must say that I like that kind of mosaic of leafs, twigs and flowers in background and on the other hand the main object is nicely isolated from background, Sharpness is quite good
I like it very much

Heyyyy Ivan,ağaç dallarının yaptağı doğal kadraj ve muhteşem ışıkla harika bir kare olmuş.Ellerine sağlık :)

merhaba Ivan,
Nice to see new species on TN. Nice to share it with us. Many thanks for it with informative notes.
Your post is great, not poor quality. Focus, POV and diagonal composition very nice. You great presented it. I have seen some Pyrgus species, but this is new for me too. Thanks for this valuable contribution,
eline sağlık, çok teşekkür ederim dostum,

Hello Ivan,

This is a a very beautiful shot of this rare yet beautiful butterfly. Excellent focus and sharpness. I love the DOF, POV and composition. Very nice and colorful BG. TFS.

Hi Ivan,
contrats to that catch, it's a good shot, I like it. Maybe I'm right - I think I saw such a skipper in Italy - I will post a shot in the WS so I would be happy if you have a look and tell me if it's the same species.
Thanks my friend, bye and greetings

I know what an excited momemt is this.
And thanks for shareing wit us.

Hi Ivan

Thanks for the poor shot (lol). Great composition except for teh leaf in from of the antenae. Good sharpness. Sorry its late and I'm off to bed.

Hej Ivan
It is always nice to see and learn something new from you :)
Nice pose and details on this one.

Hi Ivan. I am so lucky to come across two new species in TN today. The downward perch looks beautiful for a skipper looking more like a butterfly. I had one flying so fast this evening but missed the short perch but not the first :-) Well done for top class work (poor?...oh... you are so humble) and best regards. Jusni

Hi My friend Ivan,
Congratulation! for this 1st on TN. Realy nice to see the Northern Grizzled Skipper from your excellency. Wonderful details, composition and details.
TFS this fine image my friend!

Hello Ivan,
Excellent post. Good to see this species well represented in your picture. Better to have a record, even if you think it not up to your usual high standard. Thanks.

Hello Ivan,

Nice to see a new species of butterfly on TN together with a very interesting note. The image quality is not so poor as you mention in the note. Wing's pattern and colors can be well observed as well as the sharply shown body of the insect. It is very well that you have got a part of it's natural environment in the image too.

Thank you for sharing,

Hello Ivan,
Beautiful photo of this new one on TN. Okay, the quality is not superb, but I see many photos which are a lot worse than this one. The sharpness is very good and the choice of a central place in the composition is a very good one. The contrasting colours against the BG are very beautiful.

Hello Ivan, great capture of this beautiful skkipper.
Thanks that you share this with us.
Regards, Bahadır

Hola Ivan,
felicidades por esta captura,
buen encuadre y pov,

Hi Ivan,
Very good picture of this stranger. Obviously not a studio shot but I always value very much the difficulty in finding a rare species and capturing them in natural difficult conditions. Sharp details, good lighting, natural habitat.

Hi Ivan

It's always great to see premieres on TN and for i personally congratulate you on finding something you set out to in the first place.
I know how this feels and there is a personal recognition that doesn't compare to anything. Even if this isn't a really beautiful shot, at least you got one and that mean a lot. I'm sure you'll manage a better one in the future, now that you know where to look.
Your research and dedication paid off and at least you managed a sharp shot, from a decent POV that allows a good ID.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ivan!

I'm glad for you and would like to congratulate you for this first posting of that species! I guess it's not easy to find new species that have never been posted here on TN. And I agree with Ram that you are too modest when you say that the quality is poor. The picture is fine and shows the butterfly in a fine manner. We don't always need perfectly arranged and postprocessed pictures with unnatural backgrounds. Yours reflects pure nature and - together with the very interesting notes - is a precious posting.

Kind regards

Hi Ivan,i dont understand why you saw that this pic isn't perfect. It's great, very nice details and colors and perfect pov, there a lot of same specie like that, very difficult to have a exact id,my compliments for that too, have a nice day,Luciano

What chance, good fortune and super eye! I love stories such as this, where one who has gear sees something that may only happen once in life...and honestly I see very little if anything wrong with image...or perhaps it is just the special nature of the find that makes it no difference.....and truly one can see a difference...add to that the short flight time...You saved this one of a kind beauty for later...your a trickster...I love it!

Merhaba Sevgili Dostum,

Hello Ivan,
Thanks for this new contribution to TN
I don't see why you complain about the quality of this photo, nothing to complain about !

Hello Ivan, What a beauty.
Natural sorroundings and a great clarity shot. The markings on the wing and its pattern are amazing. Ram is right in every aspect "modest" in your comments. Lovely and TFS Ganesh

Buen trabajo de conjunto aunque evidentemente puede mejorarse el enfoque. Un abrazo Ivan, siento no comentar más hoy: Josep Ignasi

Hi dear Ivan ,
Nice macro with great compo.
Well captured.

hello Ivan

in my absence from TN i have missed of your images,
i have choosed to critique one bird image
and i am choosing to critique this one too
and before i started to read your notes the reason
why i choosed this one it is of the excellent quality
of this image the excellent quality of details on the butterfly,

and when i start to read your notes i was surprised
to read that the quality of this images is poor,
for me it is excellent quality Ivan, i would love
to have the same results with all my images

also fine POV, excellent luminosity and sharpness, TFS
