We took a few days’ trip north to Stockholm and Uppsala to visit family. This accounts for our recent absence from TN and I am sorry not to have responded to the latest critiques.
The whole area was covered in banks of cloud and the temperatures were well below zero.

Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)

Swedish name: Björktrast, meaning ‘Birch Thrush’.

The Fieldfare can easily be told from other thrushes by the grey head and the orange among the dense spotting on the breast. It makes loud clacking sounds especially in a flock. In contrast the song is a soft musical chattering.

Though some stay the winter, most overwinter in Europe south of Sweden.
During the winter they feed mainly on berries such a those of the Whitebeam (Sorbus aria), shown here and Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia).

They return in the spring to breed in woodlands of most parts of the country. The nest is built of grass in a forked branch and is lined with mud.

Fieldfares are fairly common in N. and C. Europe and have even spread to S. Greenland during the last century. They spend the winter in the whole of the UK and breed in Scotland.

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 6 meters (20ft) and after light cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened. The grey light demanded the use of ISO 800 and the image had to be adjusted for light levels.

Interesting shot what with the berry about to disappear. Rather sharp for hand-held on a grey day.
This is one of those shots that might benefit from a just bit of color saturation to bring out the reds and yellows.

Hi Ivan,

Perfect timing to get this priceless shot. That berry looks too big for his mouth! The poor thing must be so cold with all that snow on his plumage. It's too bad you didn't have better weather for your trip but you came home with a terrific picture to share with us.

Dear Ivan
I noticed that you where gone, it is remarkable how quick one can pick up if somebody that is always "there" disappear for a few days. I am glad to see you around.
There are lots of details in this image that is praiseworthy and I'll mention a few. I like the pose in which you have captured this Fieldfare with its beak stuffed with berries. The colour of the berries in the snow is just magic, as the contrast between white and red is great. I also like the frontal view as now one can see the patterns and colouring on the chest feathers beautifully. The clarity of the ice crystals that formed around the berries is beautiful and seen with great clarity. Thanks for sharing this bird as it is new to me. Kind regards.
Anna

Dear Ivan!

Your picture is impressive because it reflects the hard reality of a bird's life in winter very well. The atmosphere in the picture transmits the impression of the cold season very well. The rowan berries form a fine element of the picture's composition and highlight the winterly scenery.

Kind regards

Markus
