[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It is one of my own personal rules to avoid posting slightly different images of the same subject; especially one after the other but here I make an exception.
The previous image was posted to show that Fieldfares eat frozen berries in cold winters.
This one was taken of the same bird as a winter portrait.

Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)

Swedish name: Björktrast, meaning ‘Birch Thrush’.

The Fieldfare can easily be told from other thrushes by the grey head and the orange among the dense spotting on the breast. It makes loud clacking sounds especially in a flock. In contrast the song is a soft musical chattering.

Though some stay the winter, most overwinter in Europe south of Sweden.
During the winter they feed mainly on berries such a those of the Whitebeam (Sorbus aria), as shown here and Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia).

They return in the spring to breed in woodlands of most parts of the country. The nest is built of grass in a forked branch and is lined with mud.

Fieldfares are fairly common in N. and C. Europe and have even spread to S. Greenland during the last century. They spend the winter in the whole of the UK and breed in Scotland.

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 6 meters (20ft) and after light cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened. The grey light demanded the use of ISO 800 and the image had to be adjusted for light levels.

Hi Ivan,
so lovely and a very romatic view of the capture. so excitingly expressed in the tone and mood. Very special indeed with the snow covered fruits.
This winter portrait is indded powerful, the white background really delivers the purpose perfectly. The features of the bird is shown with full impact. The pattern, the colours and the scene is very well composed and presented.
Excellent piece of work.

Regards,
Foozi

Hello Ivan,
It seems to be freezing cold in Sweden. We have low temperatures too, but not like that.
Very fine bird portrait you show us here. The frozen red berries create a beautiful natural surrounding and show us also a source of food for Turdus pilaris in wintertime. The bird has a very subtle plumage, well rendered against the white sky. Very fine shot.

Hi Ivan,
It is a very nice photo of this Bird, in a very cool winter!

Nothing delights me more than to see a fresh and seasonal capture of wild life, like in this picture of yours showing a Fieldfare perched on a snow-clad branch laden with frozen berries, Ivan.
This is a remarkably crisp image giving the frontal view of the bird with fine details and colours on its breast. The eye with a tiny glint in it looks very beautiful.
I missed seeing your first picture of the subject, so I'm happy with seeing the second one.
Thanks and regards.

Glad you made the exception to your rule. Indeed, a lovely winter portrait.

While different, it brought to my mind the birds in Pieter Brueghel's painiting "Hunters in the Snow"...

Hi Ivan,

And a wonderful winter portrait of the Fieldfare it is! A handsome bird looking very cold on that snowy branch. I love the fine details of his face, eye and plumage. The composition with him surrounded by the frozen berries is superb.

Hej Dostum Ivan,

Another great capture of a pretty fieldfare from different POV. This looks very sharp and clear, the composition also incredible. I like the ideal lighting on the feathers. Great work MF!
TFS ans have a nice night!
Cheers,

Bayram

Hello Ivan friend,
Ok, it's really rare that you or the bird has not been frozen, and have had sufficient time to take more than one photo!
Anyway, this "cooling Björktrast" remains a beautiful bird. By the way, great skill to manage exposure, achieving a well-defined bird against that background that clear. Good work.

Merhaba Dostum Ivan!
Selamlar
