I went to visit my son and his family and we took an 80 km trip to a locality where this rare butterfly is known to occur.

Scarce Fritillary , Euphydryas maturna

I do not like the use of the words 'common' or 'scarce' to describe the status of a species, but this one is really scarce.

Swedish name: Asknätfjäril, meaning 'Ash fritillary'. This refers to the main larval host plant in Sweden that is Fraxinus excelsior. It has a two - year life cycle as the larvae take a long time to develop.

This species of fritillary is one of the rarest in Europe and it is red-listed as Endangered. In Sweden it is found in two small localities about 100 km north and 250 km west of Stockholm.

It is less rare in Eastern Europe and S. Finland, where the larval host plant is different and common, Melampyrum pratense. It has been shown once on TN, a photo from Romania.

It was cloudy and grey and as rain was forecasted for the day we hadn't much hope in seeing this rarity and indeed we saw only a few butterflies, most of them resting. Just before we were about to give up I saw this one at rest looking like an amber jewel among the greenery.
A few minutes after we had photographed this female it started to rain. Though we were not able to photograph the Scarce fritillary with open wings we were satisfied with this.

This was taken with my camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6ft) on a cheap tripod.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW to JPEG.

As both Luciano and Maurizio remarked it looks over-saturated, but before posting I reduced the saturation by 10%. This butterfly has strong colouring in this type of light.

Great POV and DOF, very well blurred bg. Nice, natural colors, good sharpness, fine details. I like the diagonal composition as well.

I'm concerned to know that this beautiful butterfly is now on the endangered list, Ivan. Your picture of it is so appealing one really feels a deep sense of loss at the prospect of losing it forever. Has human intervention been responsible for it?
The picture is technically superb. The colour of this species is really something different.
Best regards.

That red almost looks like it is about to drip off. It almost looks like mother nature came along right before you did and fresh painted the beauty. Nice luck to catch a rarity Ivan. Good show!

Bonjour Ivan,

Beautifull specimen. The long lens plus converter is not as sharp as would be a specialised macro lens, but it does give you the advantage of not disturmbing you subject. plus the fact that you get a very compress perspective. The red stand out beautifully against the green foliage. Bautifull work and TFS.

Hello Ivan,
The trouble you took to go and look for this butterfly was excellently well rewarded with this fabulous image. Very beautiful and in very good quality. Congratulations.

Hello Ivan,
congratulations to you for this very special documentation! It takes a good deal of knowledge, planning, decisive travel, and good luck to see the very rare Melitaea maturna, and to take such a favourable documentation under apparent low light conditions. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Ivan, this butterfly is just beautiful. Great find and capture. Bill

Hello Ivan,

This is interesting and impressive butterfly for me.
So, it's impressive that it has red legs and red wings with pink macula.
And, it's harmonized well by good composition and good focus, I think.

Regards,
mikio

Hello Ivan.
This is a beautiful butterfly in vibrant colors in the wild. The closed wings show excellent markings and fine details of the vein. Very good sharpness popping out well against the silenced green bg.
Thanks and have a nice day.
