[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Recently Ulla posted the male and female Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) nicely shown on the same image.
Here are the same individuals, the female inactive with her wings closed.

But there is a story to tell:
At first the male was very interested in the female and was chasing her until she settled. He also settled near her. This is when Ulla took her shot with both male and female resting with their wings open.
The male then fluttered close to and over the female with intent to pair with her. Up to this stage the attraction was purely visual.

When he fluttered close to her the WORKSHOP shows what the female did.

She lifted up her abdomen to show him that she had already been fertilised! After fertilisation she has the scent of male pheromones on the tip and this tells the hopeful male that it’s too late!

If she were a virgin she would vibrate her wings and lift the abdomen up slightly to facilitate copulation and there would be no male scent to deter the hopeful suitor.

I have seen this in other Pierid butterflies, but it is the first time I have seen this behaviour in Orange Tips.

After he got this message he needed to rest in the sunshine, which is what my posting shows.

Both images were taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about two meters. After moderate cropping and size reduction the images were selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,
it's Orange tip time, I tried my hand myself, but you clearly show me here what a long way I have to go yet for a picture worthy of TN. In your picture you mastered the difficult contrasts extremely well because of the subdued light and your expert handling of the camera. My respect, Ivan! What a great note you wrote to go along, thanks for that.
Best regards

Hello Ivan

Good capture from these butterfly's,good composition.

Hello Ivan
First of all I must Thank you for such fascinating notes detailing the behaviour that you and Ulla witnessed and presenting it in a very well explained note.
Secondly the photography is exemplary and details the notes perfectly...It is fascinating to me and worthy of any reference book.
I have truly learnt something this evening...My eyes will be wider now and my patience longer thanks to you.
Best regards

Hi Ivan

Great capture of both the Male and Female Orange tips, and also nice to see both the open winged and close winged pose too.
Very nice details and lovely colours.
Great notes too with a interesting workshop, I hope he has better luck with his next lady friend.

Hmmm..well it's too late now...for me anyway...I am beyond interest, however I wish folks would act as civilly in the US...kids especially...I am a believer in abstaining until marriage..and not only did I favor it, I and my wife practiced it. I was 21 years olds..now as to my kids...all bets are off...I don't judge them though. I know their hearts... nature in all creatures is not as same as butterfly though right? There are mammals which sexual behaviour would get a human arrested. Your story brings up volumes...mostly philosophy though, not nature...A good lesson though.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent photo and note. I tried to take photos of this nice butterfly this afternoon. But it's very difficult! Your photo is a real performance. TFS,

Excellent post, great interest Ivan.
You have documented the mating bahaviour very well with your observations, and the WS addition..
The posted image is excellent, love the comp including the open winged male superior to the female below rt corner.
Very well done!

Hi Ivan,

Good picture of the dissappointed male. Poor boy! Very well composed picture with nice colours and sharp details.

hello Ivan,
Most interesting note going with this splendid picture of the Orange Tip. Actually I already saw several times this behaviour, but I couldn't intereprete it correctely. You also focused spot on the male and it is rarely seen in such a sharp way.Un grand bravo

Hello Ivan, This is beautiful. The note is very interesting and superb focus. Ganesh

Dear Ivan,
I have to say, that males looks much more interesting than females, especially if we compare colouration of the two :) Very nice POV, clearly showing natural beauty if this species.
I like also that you added workshop, two pictures make a very good and total presentation about this Pieridae species.
Nice to watch and nice to read! And that is the best way to learn sometning! And thank you for that!
Friendly yours,

Hi Ivan,

You taught me something new today about butterflies! He is really a beauty and you captured him in a perfect position to show off those lovely orange tips. Beautiful colors and markings shown in good detail.

Hello Ivan,

Excellent capture of this couple. Great sharpness and wonderful colours. The picture in the WS is very interesting and beautiful too.

Well, I'm sorry for the "late comer" male Ivan, but as they say, "the early bird ..."! Your two captures comprise a fine lesson in breeding strategies of b.flies my friend, and this one is a faultless macro take, I'm sure Ulla will also prefer this take to hers, which was also quite nice.

Ivan, this is some fantastic photography!
The composition and POV with the female in the BG and the stunning male right "in-your-face" is brilliant!
Very, very sharp with great clarity.
I love the WS posting too... I wouldn't have had a clue what the female was doing if I saw it :-)
Stunning work!

Splendida macro, eccellenti POV e DOF, molto bella la composizione con le farfalle su piani e posture diverse, molto buona la nitidezza e bellissimi i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Ivan. This is just stunning image from top view in full spread wings. I don't think we have orange tips here and the inactive female is very well included under the shade. I like the color and well controlled saturation bringing out the brilliance in the composition. Well done and best regards. Jusni

hello Ivan

very beautiful nature life image of these butterflys,
with very fine POV and DOF, i love the excellent density
